Sorry for your loss. I've also had to put pets down in the past and although I know it's the right thing to do to end their suffering, it's never easy. I am always with them though because they deserve to have family there at the end.

As a side note, one of our dogs died of natural causes last week at the age of 12 years ...

My condolences! That's terrible news. Been thru that several times in my life with dogs and one cat. it's a heartbreaking experience. When you love animals, you feel it in your soul. They are family! It hurts. I'm very sorry!

Been there twice in the past few years. It was especially hard on our daughter. When it's time, you know it.

Sorry to hear that Dan. I adopted a feral cat who's been my buddy ever since. I'm sure you gave him a great life.

Sorry Dan I know how much your cats mean to ya, been there too many times but that also means I've had lots of great animals. We've got one that's headed that way, hopefully will hold on another year but I don't know.

Firstly let me say that I am deeply sorry as many of us here have had this experience and it's something we never get used to but we do get through it. We have 6 indoor cats and feed two outside ( one of which is the mother of three indoor cats. Stella, who was the oldest at a mere 10 years old was diagnosed with lung cancer. Nope .. we don't smoke and Stella never took up the habit ..I know .. stupid joke. She had a voracious appetite but when she stopped eating we knew she was on that downward spiral. weekly visits to the vet to stimulate her appetite that worked for a while. We finally had to make that dreadful decision. I loved that cat as much as you can another living entity ... but I often wonder did I do the right thing waiting knowing what was inevitable and sad to say that I have not gotten over that to this day in that did I extend her suffering

We put our black lab, Rosanna, down about 6 years ago. It was the hardest thing I have ever done, and I cried like a baby. She was 15 - lived a good, long life, but she was suffering and hanging on for us. She knew it was time and she came and laid down right next to me, as if she was comforting me, not the other way around. When they are struggling, this is the greatest gift we can give our pets.

I went with my mom a few years ago to put her dog down. The vet was telling her about the process like they always do. He told her of having to put down their family dog, and he cried. This was an old country vet too. He probably puts down a pet on a weekly basis, and if he gets tore up, it's ok.

So sorry to hear of your loss Dan. We had our Minnie (a calico) for 18 years and it was one of the hardest things I've ever done, taking her to the vet to be put down.

Hang in there Dan.

I had to put down my Lu Lu last year. She sat on my lap for 15 years and kept the dogs honest. I cried like a baby after the needle went it.

Sorry for you and your wife's loss, Dan.
My wife and daughter had to put my beloved 20 y.o. Sparky cat down earlier this week, while I was out of town.
All three of us cried while I was in my hotel room over the phone. :-(

I'm sorry for what you're going through, but honestly: in this case, pain means you're doing it right. As trite as it may sound, we hurt because we love. I've had to do it with cats three times, and there's no way around it--it effin' hurts. Having pets is a relationship. And we are doing right by them when we make loving decisions on their behalf, including that final decision. My wife and I have two cats and they are very important to us. Our departed cat Bob is in my profile pic. I wish you and your family comfort. Here's a pic of our current two cats.
