Hi - I’ve always played a 6.5 black beauty - and have tried plenty of of snares but only really liked the acrolite as an alternative, as it is significantly different and has its own unique mojo —- but recently wondering if a 5” BB would be a worthwhile addition — or if it’s basically doing the same job as the deeper version ? Anyone own both and play both ?

I own both. You could set them up differently and get a lot of sounds out of them. Put die-cast hoops on one, different heads, wires.

Right now I have my 6.5" with a coated Vintage Emperor and 42-strand Canopus wires, tuned high. On my 5" I have die-cast hoops, 20-strand Canopus wires, and a clear white dot head, tuned medium. Totally different sound. You can get a great pop out of the 5", too. I really like having both.

I bought my 5" Black Beauty in 2009, and my 6.5" Black Beauty in 2013.

The 5" was my primary snare for many years, the 6.5" has never gotten as much use from me. I don't have a good reason why.

5 and a 6.5 snare drum are different ...no matter make or model.
Now two 6.5 might be a Question but depth is a Big enough change in feel sound and speed..- to warrant both
I think) if you can afford it.
You may grab a 5" Supraphonic and call it a (less costly) day. (or a 5/5.5 wood)
and have two different dimensions.
Dimension are a main thing -I think- in drums. cymbals too, the biggest distinction

I never really got along with the 6.5” Black Beauty I had but have 5” + 6.5” Supras and Acrolites and the depth difference makes them significantly different from each other.

Different animals as eluded to earlier. There is a difference, but you need to experience it, with all shell materials. I prefer 6.5" in Acrolite, 3ply Mahogany, and Bronze, but 5" in Supraphonics(aluminum), and all the Brass shell Ludwig. iterations. Yes, I still own many in both depths, but different tools for different jobs.

I have a 6.5 that I LOVE but also bought a 5 Raw Brass that sounds so great in a different way. Tons of pop and a little more crack.
