Never played these in person, but just scooped a 15” pair online for a price too hard to pass up. Gram weights seem pretty similar to New Beats. I know Porcaro played 14” 602 heavy hats for a bit. What am I in for?

I always wanted a pair of 602 ….13” extra heavy..like Copeland used..but NEVER saw a pair offered!
Back in the 80's, I bought a pair of 14" 602 extra heavy HH's but I never really warmed up to them after a very short trial and they've been in the storage closet ever since.

Anything Formula 602 stamped HEAVY in any way, is fantastic! Rides and Hi-Hats, second to none.
Purity of alloy and Swiss craftsmanship result in cymbals with clean overtones and clear pitches, especially in heavier weights. Same weight class by any other manufacturer and you typically get clang city, the famous manhole-cover sound :)
Just my 2ct and YMMV of course. Nevertheless, please let me know if you intend to let them go

One thing that I learned about Copeland, he used all sorts of 13" hi-hats. I wouldn't doubt he used extra-heavy hats. The first Police album was almost definitely 13" Zildjian New Beats. When he eventually went to Paiste, there were ads with him using 13" 602 Mediums and 13" 602 Heavy hats. I own a Paiste brochure that lists him using the 13" 602 Medium hats and I have etched in my mind the Modern Drummer ad showing the 602 13" Heavy hats. In magazine interviews I've seen it stated that he also used 13" 2002 Medium and 13" 2002 Heavy hats as well. I've also seen a picture somewhere with him with a sound edge pair, but am not sure what series. I also remember when the 3000 series came out, an article listed him with the 13" 3000 Heavy hat.

I have to go off on a little tangent here but Paiste's current 13" hat selection is a joke. In the pro lines they have Sig Dark Crisp & 2002 SE. That's it. I get that the 16" thing has been popular for a while but seriously...it's Paiste. I really wish they'd bring back 2002 & 602 Medium & Heavy 13"s. 602 ME's in 13" would be killer too.

I agree, it seems like I'm the only drummer that still plays small hats. I have a pair of 13" dark crisp as my x-hats and my main hats are 12" Signature Heavy hats, which I love.

I wanted a Paiste version of NBs, so I went with a 602 medium top over heavy bottom, and that combo is much closer.
i pic'd up paistes 13" dark crisp hats many yrs ago 4 the only reason of never trying out 13s SO 4 a change of pace i started shopping-n-listening for 13" hats plus being a creature of habit I knew it would be 4me a huge change, i remember finally getting a new hat stand after playing a ludwig atlas hat stand for over 20yrs and getting it all set up dialed in for the gig that nite and flopping in the worst imaginable way,
so 10x's faster than the roadrunner i went home on the 1st set break and grabbed my old one lol...
I had always played 14s and/or 15s and knowing impressive fav drummers like peart using 13s and at that time in ?mid 80s copeland was using at that time using very small 12"hats sigs i think, and there was at the local liquor bar a house band down the road with a very talented 15yr old drummer i was told was *got to see him play* and he was damn impressive, a natural as i like to say and sure nuff he was playing very tiny hats that turned out on break he showed me were 12" signatures.... at any rate i got the 13" dark crisp hats and my biggest regret was i hadn't got em
sooner than i did, and i'm looking for a set as i type!

602 hats are just heavenly in ANY weight.
AGREED! doctor dude, only had one pair ever and lucked up scoring a beautiful set of F602 15" sound edge for $300, I also have BL 2oo2 15" SE hats and no comparison to the 602's
the 602's were so smooth is he best i can put into words compared to the 2oo2s. i loved the 2oo2s but they were almost harsh sounding next to the 602s.
i had to let em go tho... ebayed them and 2 fellas got into a battle royale and they sold for $1200
I was glad to see Paiste reissued the 602s, and those hats are available, whether or not they're sounding as sweet as the vintage pair i had, hope to find out 1 day

The 602 weight spread ratio (top to bottom) is not quite the same as New Beats, in my experience. The 602 bottoms need to be heavier. I wanted a Paiste version of NBs, so I went with a 602 medium top over heavy bottom, and that combo is much closer.

@Heartbeat is exactly right - new beats are medium over heavy. Does anyone know what the 15” Zilly new beats usually weight?

My 602s pictured above are more like orchestral crashes, matched in weight, that sound a 2nd or minor 3rd apart.
I play them and like them.

Most folks like the 20%-30% difference in weight.
