Not sure which iteration of his snare you are running, but I’d say a Remo Controlled Sound Reverse Dot, cranked.

Simultaneous crack and focus if you strike it in the middle of the dot and more shell tone if you take it to task addressing things a little off center.

I should be more adventurous for my resonant heads but usually just stay with an Ambassador Hazy

I was at the store yesterday and I saw a Chad Smith snare, must be a newer edition, clear and so polished that it looked like heads and hardware floating in the air.

I had one of these snares . I use coated amb. over amb. reso 99 % of the time on all my snares and it worked fine on the Smith drum . " C " UltraSound 20 strand wires too .
