Pearl COB - approximate age?

Hi all,

Any thoughts on how to ballpark a year of manufacture on this Pearl B4514L? Just received this over the weekend and will be slated for cleanup soon. The Gladstone throw is happily unbroken

Nice! I love these! Cool that you found a 6,5 deep one. I dug back through the catalogues https://www.vintagedrumguide.com/pearl_snare_drums_catalog_pages.htm
From what I can see, the lower vent hole (below the stripes) is first shown in the 1978 snare drum catalogue, but the 1975 catalogue uses the pics from the 1973 catalogue, the 1974 shows only the strainer side & there is a gap between 75 & 78....So probably late 70's

Brass? These shells are killer!

It looks just like my 5x14 with the air hole at the bottom and Gladstone throwoff. The previous owner said mine was 1978, maybe your’s is too.

Yup, chrome over brass, welded shell. I've been pretty vocal here about my love of the B4514 & B4514L. I've got one in my living room right now!

I haven’t done any “magnet” test, but the stripped down shell (how I got it) weights an unholy ton for a metal snare drum so i assume so!

The magnet didn’t stick to the lugs either. I didn’t realize the lugs were brass on these as well.
