A CS came on a 22” Slingerland bass drum I bought . I couldn’t get it off fast enough …
I just read a CS bass review of a guy expecting a premuffled head, complaining it made his bass drum sound like a tympano. Without muffling, it's really the antithesis of the typical modern bass drum sound, all hollow midrange. With the invention of the PS3 type, the extra layer was moved to the edge, non-glued, where it does a much better job.
I used a CS dot with a felt strip on a closed bass drum for a short while, huge acoustic sound. When I used it on toms, one sound guy would tweak the sound until it sounded like a clear Emp...

Re: CS and PS3:

Good comparison, PS3 and PS3 CS somewhere in the middle, CS comes up near the end:

I used to use the reverse black dot a lot on my snaredrums. However for the past months or maybe a couple years the dot flakes off. Every single time. So I stopped using them.
For clear black dots on toms the dot loosens at the edges after a while so it’s kinda the same problem there. Pity.

I wonder if they changed the manufacturing of black dots. I would try them and peel off the dots after a day or two. Now they're my favorite tom heads besides coated Ambs.

I have a set of clear black dots waiting for when the coated ambassadors that came stock on my Gretsch kit are worn out . I had used the clear black dots on my former N&C CD Maples and I really liked them on those drums .

I had dots on a set of Renowns.
Never cared for them when they were popular ,still don't, but fthe dotted on the bass sounded surprisingly very good.
Still not my cuppa.

I could never get a good sound from a CS bass head even with muffling except for when I have the Remo Submuffl on there which basically turns it into a PS3 head. Right now I have my 22x14 Gretsch kick with that setup AND a coated PS3 on the reso sitting next to my 80s Yamaha 22x18 kick which has an Evans Heavyweight batter and an ebony PS3 reso. They are both equally as loud but the Gretsch is boomier with more fundamental tone and the Yamaha is beefier, more thunderous sounding.
Anyways, I was going to try coated ambassadors on the Gretsch kick to see how I like that but this combo with the CS I have on there now sounds pretty good.
