The very first Renowns had the pewter colored square badge minus the "usa" on each size. This was sort of a catch all badge for early imported Gretsch. Those initial Renowns also had triple flange hoops. The Renown 57 drums didn't have a badge, just the white aluminum chevron with "Gretsch" debossed in it.

You'll know them when you see them'

Here's the Very 1st set. Was one configuration. 18 (long) 12/14/snare.
That was the first that 5-Star dealers got.

then it expanded.

Here's the pretty much 1st catalog appearance. PDF
finishes page 31 Piano Black

and 2.
What OP is looking at aren't looking like Renowns but Blackhawks

I only have a few of them. One is an 8x10 tom that has red sparkle lacquer into a black fade. Killer color but unfortunately it's a single drum. It has two square badges that have vent holes in the middle. The other one is a 14x16 FT in black lacquer I converted to a bass drum with hoops and a rail mount. It has the small round Renown badge with two Allen key mount screws and a large vent hole by itself. Both have the silver sealer inside. They are really nice drums. I think a tad thicker and definitely heavier than round badge drums. Both are maple plies.

Thanks guys and Joe for helping sort this out. I'm pretty confident these are not Renown's.
When it looks/sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Seller has droped out of communication with me after I asked for additional pictures.
Have a look, what do you think?

At 400% magnification it looks like this badge to me, Catalina.

Don’t know much about Gretsch history, but, didn’t Gretsch make Renown and Broadkaster lines decades ago, pre Jasper era?

If he dropped, he either figured out you were onto him or he sold. Either way, too good to be true.

That is the badge used on early Renowns...but that's not a Renown.

Those look like the early Catalina Elite before they changed the badge. I saw a similar used kit at Guitar Center one day and almost bought it since the lugs were the regular full sized Gretsch lugs (I figured for $300 it was worth it for the hardware). It had the same Gretsch badge without the “USA” or “Catalina”. The shells were luan or something similar.
