Prayers for his friends and family on their loss, what a player!

Ohh man, this is really sad news. One of my favorite drummers while I was growing up. Such powerful, yet articulate player, who could really swing... what a shame.
And yes, I always pictured him as the "young kid" out of all those great big band drummers.

RIP.
Great player. Effusive with Basie.
Saw the band in Sacramento as an early teen.

My buddy and I approached him afterwards on stage as he was gathering some things and told him how much we admired his playing.

“Thanks! You guys want to meet the Count?”

And with that, he took us back stage.

Sad news. I had the pleasure of seeing him and sitting in one of his classes at a Ludwig Drum Symposium back in the 80s.

Met him many years ago. Super nice guy. We had a few minutes talking. He signed a few things for me, including my MD Magazine.

Seeing him play at Shea’s Buffalo Theatre with the Count Basie Band, one microphone for the singer, was a musical high point for a developing musician. I was in high school. Those sounds have stuck with me for many years. Thank you Butch for the music and inspiration.

Man, sad news. Fortunate to see him several times down here in the Austin area over the last 25 years. Always great, and he was a hard swingin cat! And a really nice guy every time we interacted with him. He'll be missed.

"Whirly Bird", Butch Miles Drum Solo, Count Basie & His Orchestra, 7/13/1979

I remember that I was always impressed by Count Basies drummers, but never followed them in partcular. Honestly, I had no clue who he was. But with this solo alone, he left an impressive heritage.
