The news so far are reporting that his girlfriend and a younger man choked and beat him at home, and he died of his injuries at their hands. They (at this time) are charged with manslaughter, not murder, since presumably they didn't mean to kill him.

A terrible loss. My heartfelt condolences to all who loved him.

He plays beautifully on some current jazz records. Definitely seemed to be an up-and-comer. This is tragic.

Ooops... Sorry, I didn't see this thread and posted another one.

The mods can take it down so there aren't two of them.

This is really hurting... Aaron Diehl is booked to play here (Detroit) very soon. It looks like it might have always been as a solo booking. My heart goes out to him. Also, our local jazz radio uses Chicago's excellent WFMT over night, and they just played Cecile Salvant, who they always play the heck out of anyway. I think Mr. Leathers was part of the future of straight ahead jazz.
