If I'm not mistaken, they were shells supplied by Gretsch

Paul I had forgotten that, that sounds familiar. Did Gretsch actually make them or source them out?

Made by Gretsch, same shell as used for the early Dynasonics: that's why the seven etched lines around the middle, just like a Dyna. It was very short run of these (and the early Dynas), maybe only a couple hundred of each.
I'm always amazed that examples of limited production drums like these are still in existence. Especially since old drums are nothing but a nuisance to most people once the original owner is gone and the drums get discarded, but you have 200-300 copies of an item, sprinkled among 325,000,000+ people, through the course of 60 years - and some of them survive? The idea of 'collectability' wasn't there for 99.9999% of the population, except for coins and stamps etc, but certainly not drums....
