Has any piece of gear (drums, cymbals, hardware, etc.) developed sentimental value for you that you feel like you can never sell it or you regret that you sold it? If so, what was/is it?

Do you think it’s a silly thing and all that matters is in your hands and the music you make every time you sit behind any kit?

The latter. Sentiment has no room in my life. At one time it did but it’s all just stuff.

I don't really have any emotional attachment to the gear I use. I mean, I use it because I like it, and it functions exactly how it's intended to each and every show. But if I found I needed something different, it wouldn't hurt my feelings to move on.

I keep only what I need at any given time, which I'm fortunate enough to admit is the set I bought 12 years ago along with the hardware.

I've got a 22 thin trans. It's the first truly great cymbal that I ever bought. Never going to sell. I'll never find another like it.

I bought a 20" thin 60s Avedis from Mike Layton at the 2022 Chicago Drum Show. Besides the fact that it sounds amazing, I bought it from Mike. It stays with me.

I guess my Brady 12" x 7" Sheoak block snare as it's rare and no chance of finding or affording one again and a Bosphorus Turk flat ride that was gifted by a drummer buddy years ago ..... the rest has no emotional value at least

No sentimental value. It’s all tools. My wife has often asked, how can you get rid of that? It’s because I moved on and don’t have a use for it! I just remind her, I can’t keep everything. Had tons of super cool vintage drums. My most gigged set? Yamaha Hipgigs. They just worked for anything I'd ask of them. They outlived a bunch of really cool sets. And, even they went because I built a set of vintage orphans that had the same size toms, but my preferred 20" bass drum.....

Only the items I bought new in the 70's or 80's and held on to.

1984 Tama cherry wine Superstars in standard 12,13,16,22 sizes. My "goal" when I got them was to keep them mint for 30 yrs....and hopefully, become "collectible" by then. .Now at 38 yrs....I've done that.

My New Beat 14" hi hats and 16" A. "crash" bought new in the early to mid-70's. My first "pro" cymbals. I've never found a better sounding set of New Beats. Those will stay
with me to the end. I've only bought 3 cymbals "new" in my life. At least I still have 2 of 3. I stupidly got rid of my 20" Orchestra EAK about 4 yrs ago. Never really played it.

I had stopped playing years ago...and made a good friend of mine the deal of the century on my Premier Genista set up w cymbals and stands for his son...who after 2 yrs of playing was better than I'll ever be. So only a cymbal bag and some hardware stayed with me for about 4 yrs. I had been half teasing half seriously asking for a remote controlled tank that shot Airsoft pellets ( to retaliate with some guys at work lol) for those same 4 yrs...it had become a Christmas and birthday joke. " Wonder if Santa brought that tank"? Etc... My wife and I bought our house in 2007, that Christmas there was the box ...it was the right size ...the right weight ....finally The Tank! Nope... It was a Tama clear maple 6x14 snare drum with black nickel hardware .....I was confused for about 20 seconds then she said. " It's time to buy another set of drums for you". That kit turned into another and another then I found this forum, I have terminal G.A.S. etc... That drum is never being sold. She knew I needed this even when I didn't know it.

My dad’s old Ludwig kit, Rogers snare and a Zildjians. They were his first purchase, used, when he immigrated to America and supported our family for a long time. At this point, he considers them mine but I could never sell them. They’ll go to my niece or nephew if they are ever interested

Depends. For my birthday last year I picked up an a6400, a couple lenses, tripod/monopod etc. I lost my job a couple months later and have been on unemployment since. Due to waves of depression and anxiety sometimes I won't touch my camera for months. I know I could easily post it up as a package deal and make a decent buck, but that's the camera I worked for. I will probably hold onto it til it looks like I may be homeless, but even then I might try to keep it . Sell a lens or two for cat food hahaha

Nothing I own is sentimental... I still own my very first kit so you would think that was at least hold a special place in my heart but nope! I sold that set off to help pay for a kit in my teens and got it back (cool story) 20 years later, even restored the snare to playable condition (well, it still sucks) but would let it go in a heartbeat if I needed to.

I WANT to be sentimental, I just cant seem to muster it up. I think to my self, "I could never let this go" the whole time knowing in my heart I could let it go so fast it would suck the oxygen out of the room!

I just enjoy hunting and playing new and different instruments to much to be overly attached.

I have no sentimentality about gear with two exceptions:
1) A Ludwig 14 x 5” Engraved Black Beauty . It is sentimental because my girlfriend paid for the engraving as a 50th Bday present . The fact that John Aldridge engraved it and we have developed a good friendship adds to the sentimental connection .
2) A Steambent Sassafras 14 x 8” snare from Summit drums that Treviso gifted me. Rob is like a brother to me and this very generous gift really means a lot to me .

Three Ludwig snares: 70's Black Beauty engraved, 90's Black Beauty unengraved (my 30th birthday present from my family) and my old ´62 Supra, bought in the early 80's - one for each of my kids after I'm gone, hopefully lots of years from now.
My first drum kit: Ludwig BOP. Stays with me and later on it's up to my kids to do whatever they want with it.

I have the Acrolite I carried to elementary school, with case and stand. That probably isn’t going anywhere. Other than that I like trying new sounds and can’t / don’t want to keep it all.

Generally, I avoid getting emotionally attached to things I own. However, my Ludwig kit is a different story. It was gifted to me by my cousin who purchased it in 1965 through money he earned from his paper route. It's a kit I've always coveted so you can imagine my joy when he gifted it to me out of the blue. I promised him I would never sell it. Instead, it will be passed on to my son who also plays the drums, although he's now become more proficient in the guitar. I would be quite upset if anything ever happened to this kit. Every other piece of drum gear I own is easily replaceable.
