Should I add a 10" or 12" to my kit?

I have a Jenkins Martin kit in a 13/16/24 configuration and want to add a smaller tom. I'm leaning toward a 10" because it would stand out more distinctly from the 13", but I welcome feedback from the DFO braintrust.

Bonus points: talk me into or out of adding a matching snare. I like my current snare quite a bit, but GAS is GAS.

Add the 10” AND 12” - get the snare for the next exacerbation of GAS.

in a word... YES! To all of it!!!

I like the classic combo of 12 and 13",. but a 10" is one of my favorite sizes!

If you postpone getting the extra tom and snare...the day you decide you have to have them they will no longer be available.
It's a law.

I would go for both 10 and the 12. There will be times when you'll want both, then times just one tom for a small short gig or what ever. Then you will have a choice of the three if you only want to use one.

Do you have a larger floor tom in your line up? That could be a another thought if not.

I was at the same crossroad almost four decades ago when I toured in a rock band. I went full throttle and got an 8, 10, 12, 14, 15 toms and 18 and 20-inch floor toms. Also got a 26-inch bass drum. I already had a 13 tom, 16 floor tom and 20, 22 & 24 bass drums. I had no regrets having a complete shell bank to choose from. They were the Imperialstars made in Japan. They and the Yamaha Rock Tour Customs of the '90s were kings of the stage. Hair bands loved them for they were brutal. Still got them today.

I agree with adding a 10 if you plan to have both rack toms in use, however..... if you get the 12, you then have the option of using the 12 OR the 13 as well as both together. Or, just get both.... it's only money!

10…

100% what Tommy D said…

I’m totally in love with 10, 16 on both my kits… and the 13 would work too.

I've recently bought a 10" tom for my Ludwig Fab outfit. Really liking the 10,13,16 spread, and the 10" frees up a bit more space up top.
