So I got a new simmons sd350 to use as a practice kit. Eventually I'll probably upgrade to a kick drum tower, but for now I'm using what they call a kick drum module. It's all plastic and the beater actually swings towards the floor to hit the trigger. There is barely any tension in the spring on the pedal. Is there any way to tighten the springs on these things so that it snaps back up a little better

Prob not. Get a kick pad (£30 ish on ebay in the UK, for a Yamaha KP65 or Roland KD8 for example) and use an acoustic pedal of choice.
