Recently scored This sweet 4piece jazz kit at a thrift store and looking for help with identifying its age. It has the silver niles Badges.

Slingerland serial numbers reset during the silver badge era - sometime around 1971. I don’t think they made it quite as high as yours before the reset (reset around 250000 rather than approaching 300000 as yours are). So these are likely from 1976/1977. Are they three pky with rings or straight shells?

They are 3 ply without reinforcement rings

If you are sure they are 3 ply without rings then the drums are '81 or newer. All the badge grommets have been badly tampered with so the serials are rendered unreliable for dating. This kit may have been de-wrapped and refinished.

pretty obvious refinished when can see inside lip of badge grommet has been removed and reinstalled, so could be someone bought badges for newer kit, but most likely these are 5 ply shells. If they are not 5 ply, and indeed 3 ply WITHOUT reinforcement rings, then indeed 80's era...not bad shells, but were more a budget line shell.

I’m gonna take off a head and check the ply they could very well be 5 ply. I’m pretty sure they were refinished because although it’s apparent that they did a nice job, there was one poly drip visible. It could be possible as well that a wrap was removed and then finished with a dark stain. Until I confirm the number of plys here is another thing I forgot to mention. There are Slingerland stamps inside the shells. Also eager to discuss the hardware later if anyone is game. Thanks so much for your input! This forum is really cool! Glad I joined.

The script "Slingerland" stamp was used from '77-'79, these are most likely 5-ply.

That’s definitely five plies. So probably from 77ish based on the intersection of serial number and script stamp I think?

It is classic Slingerland 5-ply. Thin, thick, thin, thick, thin. The outermost thick and thin plies are partially obscured by a post factory stain.

That’s definitely five plies. Looks like 1. thin maple, 2. thin mahogany (or possibly maple in a different direction?), 3. thick poplar, 4. thin mahogany, and 5. thin maple. So probably from 77ish based on the intersection of serial number and script stamp I think?
Great! So it looks like 77 it is!

Ya, man I’d love to see what they looked like originally, most likely with a factory wrap?
