I picked up this snare and noticed that it doesn't have a tone control. All the vintage Slingerlands I've ever seen have had one. What's the deal?

The 8 lug Student Model had no muffler and came with single flange/claws. But you could order it with stick savers for $4 more! 1960 catalog:
That's a lil beaut right there. The mahogany/poplar/mahogany shell and COB hoop config is the magic combo.

Yeah, it's basically a Hollywood Ace without a muffler. Great drums!

Yes, there is a date stamp. As far as I can tell, it says Oct 13, who knows. I put a vintage head on it for fun.

Put the original snares on and was amazed at how good they sound!
Oct 13 1958 maybe? Has to be no later than mid 1963 when they went to maple interior.

According to this, the Niles pre-serial badge was only used from April 1961 through September 1962.

The latest it could possibly be is Oct 1962. And more than likely a year or two before that.

Yup, pretty sure 61 the only year the throw to the left of the badge.

jptrickster, I thought you would pick up on that detail. Singerland historian Dr. Wenk claims snare hardware was oriented that way from the summer of '60 to the spring of '61. How do the date stamps on your snares align with that statement?

Based on 6 examples I have/had all were '61 latest being July. I've only heard of one with the '60 stamp and I've lOOked!

I don't have a problem with where they put the strainer. I don't mind one bit that there's no tone control. However, why did they decide to put the wrap seam in the worst possible place? Such a pain to get the strings through the butt.
