Had one, and then the second one came with a L&L kit from the 50s .
Note the spacing between the lugs on the 2 snares...that old question: 5" or 5.5" ?

Fifteen Gretsch, eight Slingerland, eight DW, six Ludwig, two Noble & Cooley, one Joyful Noise, one Dunnett, one Rogers, one Leedy, one McKenzie, and one Spawn.
Forty-five total.
I have not counted in a while. Yikes.

It is June 22, 2022, six months since I made this post. I sold four and bought two since this was originally posted.
Fourteen Gretsch, eight DW, six Slingerland, six Ludwig, two Noble & Cooley, one Joyful Noise, one Dunnett, one Rogers, one Summit, one McKenzie, and one Spawn.
Forty-three total.

Holy smokes! And here I thought I was overdoing it with 7 and 4 more on the way. I’ve actually already decided to sell at least two of them.
I only owned the smaller one for a while, had to sell when downsizing. Photo is from Maxwell Drums, whence I got the smaller of the two in 2018.

Kind of, but for a while now, I've done a variation of that, where I stick to a general size and go for different materials.
Namely, wood and metal.
I did it with the Ludwig kit (although the metal shelled snare drum was a Tama, but both were 13's).
Nowadays, I've gone back to the glory of the 14x5.
I've got a Premier Cabria (wood) and a Premier APK (metal).
Currently working on a Ferro counterpart for my 14x5 wood Sonor.

I have two 6.5 1920's NOB (one Slingerland 1 piece and one Ludwig 2 piece.) I have the Ludwig tuned for rock and put DC on it, and the Slingerland has old 1.6 NOB tf hoops, and it tuned for jazz with a skyntome head.
I have an 8" Yamaha Recording Custom that is tuned for jazz, and an 8" Eames Naturaltone (same shell as the RC) with wood hoops tuned for rock.
I also have a stock Gretsch 6.5, and a custom Gretsch 6". But the 6" has different hoops, strainer, edges, heads, etc... The 6.5 is tuned for jazz, has a Dip Fiberskyn and still has the internal muffler (only drum that I have that still has one,) and the 6" is tuned low for the 80's deep fat thing.
They are the only "doubles" (or close to doubles) that I have, and both for good reason, both are DAMN FINE sounding drums! And once I get a drum dialed in, I don't want to mess with it.) Although there are a few other drums that sound very similar, but I'm not trimming the palette down, I like having "options."

Sorry for the late word, but this conversation reminds me of the time Currotto introduced himself to the old DCI drum forum.
Someone asked how many snare drums each of us had.
Currotto's answer was 2500.
I think the thread went about 3 more pages before someone went, "...wait...what did he write? ".
I will never forget that one. =)

I have the Tama SLP Classic Maple 5.5x14 and just for grins I got the DCP 6.5x14 version.

I also ended up with a Zelkova pair. I think it was Jazz Doc that said if he could only have one, he’d go with the 6.5”x14”. Seemed like a practical approach, but the sound on the vids of the 5”x14” were really calling to me.
So, not long after finding the 6.5”, Fitzy was nice enough to put his 5” up for sale at a fair price.
Out of the box, it sounded good enough for me to break my Cardinal rule against bringing an untested piece of gear out to a gig. As a matter of fact, I’ll be bringing it out again today on another low-volume Jazz gig.

Really…..sometimes you really oughta just go with your gut instinct….otherwise there’s a good chance you’ll end up with 2 instead of 1!
I’m really digging the 5” but the 6.5” is no slouch.
Wow! I really can’t decide between the 2. The 5” on the recent videos I’ve seen sounds incredible. Which one do you prefer?

Well, back when I was playing mostly rock gigs a 6.5x14 would’ve been a sure bet, but since the gigs that I’ve been getting seem to be geared more towards Jazz or lower-volume, shallower drums have been my choice most of the time.
