I’ve acquired a 1980’s Yamaha SD075, said to be a precursor of Recording Custom snares. I’m trying to set it up with fresh heads, etc.
The snare bed is quite shallow. It appears to be wide but with very gradual slope/taper.

Any suggestions for snare wires? Is the 20 too wide?
It’s an amazing (to me) drum. Aluminum hoops, 10 lug, beautiful fit and finish.

Thanks!

Drums with really shallow beds seem to benefit from a wire with angled ends. I prefer fat cat “pitched” snare wires for these purposes. I use them with strings to attach.

Thanks for the tip. I just ordered a set.
I typically use grosgrain ribbon. Does string make a difference?

I have that same Yamaha SD-075 snare. It still has the original 20 strand wires from Yamaha on it. They are tied on with string. If that was good enough for Yamaha, it's good enough for me. The snare sounds fantastic.
