Sorry, but this is just wrong! I messaged the guy to see if this is the same drum. Let's see if I get a response. Does he really think he can more than double his money?

It still amazes me that folks still use 99 dollars or 99 cents when they should just round up. Sorry, but that bugs the schitt outta me.

He should just list the damn thing at $8000. He's not fooling anyone.

How gasoline prices are listed. Oh, don't get me started!

Why does it matter? Do you think you can do something about it? The drum has a "make an offer" option, so if you're really interested you should submit an offer and see if he bites. I would guess he's not going to respond and he might not double his money, but he could easily pocket $1k or so in flipping it.

I say move onward and don't let things like this bother you so much.

Imagine the person who dropped this drum off at the Goodwill now stumbling onto this. That certainly would leave an uneasy feeling in the pit of most people's stomachs.

Something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I am wondering, however, about the "S" written in pencil on the shell. Is that something Ludwig put on shells to designate a wrapped shell? I sure hope no one actually erases it...

Perhaps "Special order", which is what these drums were?

Or even "Salesman"?

Looks like p00der moved to Tomball, TX . . .

Seriously, whoever bought this from Shopgoodwill obviously did so with the intention of flipping it. If that was the plan from the beginning, it's not hard to believe that they would list for as high a price as they could imagine it might fetch under the best of conditions.

What I am impressed with is how well this thing cleaned up. Outside of the fading on the wrap (which you would have to expect) this thing looks perfect.

All of you are absolutely right about this drum! In one respect, I guess the thought is why can't this happen to me?!!! It was just my first gut response, but in hindsight, there is nothing wrong with flipping an item for profit. At least he's not selling the drum piece by piece! Thanks to all for teaching me a valuable lesson!

If it was a "salesman sample" it would have all the pearls available, not just sparkles. It's banded pearl...........look in the catalog.

I am curious about the basis for the following passage from the eBay listing:

"Up for sale is an original 1959 Ludwig WFL "Salesman Sparkle" 14" x 6.5" Snare Drum. Many have heard of its existence, but few have seen proof; photographic evidence depicting its presence is nearly impossible to uncover. Only 5 of these "Salesmen Sparkle" drum kits are known to have been produced, all-of-which were intended to be used ONLY by official sales reps, to showcase all available Sparkle finishes to dealers and consumers. While rare in-and-of-itself, this particular snare sets itself apart from its uber-rare counter-parts in one particular way...its size. This might be one of the only 14" x 6.5" snare drums ever produced in this finish, as the majority were known to have been manufactured in the standard 14" x 5.5" sizing."

Is this just made up or is there some independent source which can support this claim? I see in the 1953 WFL catalog that dealers are invited to order a "Dealer Display" parade drum with all seven pearls (five sparkles, WMP and BDP) and two different hardware styles (presumably chrome and nickel). I have held one of these myself, so that con't be that rare (see catalog here http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/images/finishes/wfl/53_wfl_large.jpg )

Good point, Bun.

I guess what tripped me up is the description of "Salesman Sparkle" in the listing.

Rick, It's made up. I've seen a couple other 6.5x14's, and own one myself.
