I always considered Alex Acuna a hand percussion guy but damn he's a bad ass on drums. Rockin' the acrylic Fibes ala BC. I thoroughly enjoyed this clip from '76 before Peter Erskine came aboard.

I recall when I first heard this on FM Tokyo, maybe in 1978 (before the June performances with Erskine). I scrambled to get a friend to record it. Now, fortunately, thanks to the late Claude Nobs, we can see it as well.

Those Fibes sounded great too.

I saw Alex twice with Weather Report, playing a beautiful blue Rogers kit.

He opened the encore of the 2nd show with a drum solo. He was almost completely encircled by his kit and percussion - congas, timbales, tymp - and did a 360 run around playing everything.

I was introduced to him as a drummer before I learned what a killer hand percussionist he is.

His discography is very impressive. 75 years young!
