Any track by Vinny on Gino's Nightwalker album... and I loved it!!!
Hey Gino's actually originally from Montreal. Thanks for reminding me of him. He's had some great (if somewhat cheezy) stuff out...

But yeah I'm listenning to Nightwalker as I'm typing this and it's pretty much a chop fest with words vaguely thrown around... Feels like there was a lot of peruvian snow around...

John Siomos on Tudd Rudgren and Peter Frampton stuff. Busy but very tasteful.
John Panozzo, Styx's original drummer. Busy on certain tracks but killer chops. Underated IMO

The ones who immediately came to mind for me include Joey Baron, Bill Stewart, and Billy Martin. These players can be busy as you-know-what-but-DFO-content-filters-treat-us-like-the-children-we-are, yet their playing never steps on any toes. Feel and tone above all else, yet the deluge of notes pour out neatly under whoever they’re supporting in the moment.

This is my 1st time seeing
Depeche Mode perform this song live.
The drums are understandably busy,
but it fits their style for this song...

Bruce Gary on My Sharona

Clem Burke on lots of Blondie tracks, particularly Dreaming and Heart of Glass.

The Mars Volta albums 'De-Loused in the Comatorium' and 'Frances the Mute', with Jon Theodore on drums.

Song one in particular.

The first two examples are obviously albums featuring the drummers, but the grooves while busy still fit/make the music.

Ian Paice, mentioned earlier.

Blundell busying all over the place behind Steve Hackett on his tours, to the point of getting totally in the way of Steve's leads and all the other players.

The music doesn't need commentary, especially on splash cymbals, throw those bloody stupid things out!

Sorry, a bit of a pet peeve. John Shearer with his 100 piece Ludwig kit was more tasteful.

Pretty much any Allan Holdsworth record with Chad Wackerman, Gary Husband, Vinnie Coliauta, or Gary Novak.
Damion Reid, Virgil Donatti, Jim Black (sometimes busy) Gerald Cleaver (sometimes busy) Christan Lillinger.

“Give Blood” from the White City album by Pete Townsend. Simon Philips is a freight train on this tune. Pino’s fretless bass line and fills along with David Gilmore’s guitar layers complete the juggernaut. The fact that an accessible tune that featured such technical playing was a radio hit when released was thrilling.
I totally agree. I loved that song when it came out.

Here's another song with busy and absolutely fantastic drumming.

Here's one. One of my favorite drummers, Joel Rosenblatt, from way back in his Spyro Gyra days. Joel is to my ear one of the most musical drummers you'll find. He NEVER overplays. He's super "busy" on this one, but it all fits. Masterfully (and musically).

I think Steve Ferrone gets just the right kind of busy on this one, especially in the final one-third to one-fourth of the record . . .

Growing up listening to Neil and Moony and Bill Ward, I got the idea that you had to do a fill every four bars. At least if you were any good, you had to. :) It took me a LONG time to break that habit. Now some of my favorite drum parts have almost no fills, like Steve Jordan stuff.

The Purdie interview came at a perfect time as I went into the studio last Tuesday to record with a Jazzy/bluesy singer, and I just got out of the way and grooved. No hero fills, just make it feel good. She's the star, not me. I'm extremely pleased with how it turned out.

There are a LOT of drummers who grew up on that stuff and didn't realize the world changed. That drummer who hits a crash on beat one of almost every bar? He just learned to play off a Lynyrd Skynyrd record.
