How is it that a drummer can own Sonor drums and hardware with factory labels and logos plastered all of it then call it Sonar, whether it be spoken or written?

I can almost understand how one could mistake spelling when trying to write Zildjian (Zilgan, Zildgin, Ziljian etc)...

But how can Sonor be so badly mistook for Sonar by so many?!!

I don't even own a single piece of Sonor gear and it boggles me, I just had to get that off my chest...

I'm with you snaffoo!

I work at a drum shop and I've owned Sonors. I just can't bring myself to change the pronunciation of it. All my customers say it wrong and it's always a pain in the butt changing their minds lol

Maybe we should start teaching them otherwise?

Same thing goes for Paiste which is pronounced pie-stee in north america. And pie-stah in europe.

What's wrong with people talking about SONAR drums? They probably give equal time to talk about those LUGWIGS,SWINGERLANDS, RODGERS, LEDDYS, and GRINCH drums.

But "SONOR" (pronounced ZO'-nor in Europe) you'd think people would get. It's German (and English, as in "sonorous") for "Tone".

My understanding was that it is correctly pronounced "son-OR," with the emphasis on the last syllable, but I could be wrong. Certainly no one in the U.S. says it that way.

I've always wondered...

I own a drum shop. I was a manufacturer's rep for 17 years. I've been in and around the drum business all my life (I'm 55).
I've heard every variation of Sonor out there -- some from the Germans, some from Big-Cheese's at US office of Hohner (Sonor's parent company). They all say it differently.
I've personally asked Ken Hoshino (owner of the parent company of Tama), whether it's "Tah-ma" or TAA-ma." He refused to answer.
I've had drinks with Eric Paiste (son of founder Toomas). He says his own name "PIE-stee." But he doesn't care how you pronounce it. Not one bit.

Why don't they care? THEY'RE JUST GLAD YOU'RE SAYING THEIR NAME! How do you pronounce it? No one cares!!

I was kinda stunned when I first heard it as 'S'nore' in their video about the Designers. I'll always say Sonor like the underwater radar.

Yes it is Pie Stee.. or really even less of the second syllable.. kind of like Piesth or so Michael told me. Personally I think Pie stee is close enough.

You wanna hear some great mispronounciations listen to college radio jazz shows... Za ween al? Oh no don't get me started!

When I worked for Sonor USA, we said "SO-nor". The Germans accent the second syllable. But they also say "alu-MIN-ee-um". Differences in dialect.
