Splash cymbals...how critical are they?

IMO they are the least critical type of common drum kit cymbals. Rides, Hats, Crashes, and Chinas are all more useful.

However, it doesn’t mean that I don’t use and love them. I always have 2-3 splashes setup on my kit that live on the left side. I love using them as accents for complicated closed hi-hat work.

The only reason I could ever see owning another splash is if I get a gig with an old-timey jazz band where songs end with a splash. Which is a possibility since I have done those types of gigs on bass with a trumpeter/singer who found a local niche doing stuff like that. Otherwise, I'm with Ginger Baker, who usually used two...joke cymbal.

How critical?

My splash cymbal complains, "you suck - you never hit me anymore!"

So I scream back, "because splash cymbals are the stupidest ***ing things on the ****ing planet!!!"

So I guess my answer is that they are slightly less critical than I am.
