$1,200? It'll go towards expenses such as the mortgage, utility bills, credit card bills, car insurance, food. Yeah, a car? Really? Does it run?

This is not taxable income. it is an advance on a tax credit for your 2020 return.
You are correct, I had read some misinformation that said otherwise. Still, since it is -as you say- an advance on a tax credit, that means it is money that we must plan to replace or forego later on.

That is my understanding. I believe there are scenarios where it could diminish someone's 2020 tax refund amount but I don't believe this will cause anyone to actually owe money on their 2020 returns. I know there are situations where someone may not get it this year but will get it next year when they file because of their income amount on their most recent tax filing might not meet the threshold amount of eligibility today.

Its like COD mobile.

Why in the heck would anyone want to pay for it as it is free on the web. Yeah it doesn’t get you that flashy new loot crate but its playable just as fine without paying.

OK, bear with me....
I'm getting a wristwatch. The components are Swiss and Italian, the company is based in Italy, and the retailer is on Long Island. So, I'm putting some money into the economies of Italy and New York. That makes me feel good. Oh, and also the watch....

Stimulus doesn't seem like a good name for money that so many people will use to pay rent or eat. Bridge loan would be more accurate.
The money should be used to catch up on late payments for obligations like shelter, food, security, health bills. Any/all money owed, even with postponement of money owed now is still going to be owed, probably due in full when the this mess is over.

Don't let this ruin your credit, reputation, and violate your obligation to honor your commitments.
Just do the right thing.

Would it not be more prudent to take this stimulus money (if you don’t need it) to help someone less fortunate or donate it to combat COVID-19 ?

My wife is working from home, and I work in IT at the VA Hospital. I get every third week to work from home. We are doing OK, and are planning to give at least some of our funds to the local food bank. We live in a fairly rural area, and it is always needed there.

Reading these replies I feel like I’m in an episode of the Flinstones with an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other.

I’d need to know that the donation would be fully used, not eaten up by some “administrative fees”, like so many donations are. Yeah, I could hand it to someone myself. I think it will be smarter to save it in case it’s needed at some future point, like to pay smugglers to get us out of this country...
