Hi all,

Calling users of TAMA’s The Classic lightweight hihat stand.

Couldn’t find an answer after an admittedly quick search…

What is the clutch diameter for this stand? Will it work with a ~10mm vintage cymbal bell hole?

I would plan on replacing the bottom cup with the Canopus accessory CHSP-BC10… Unless it is already a 10mm or smaller post there. Maybe someone can let me know that info also!

Thanks very much!

Not sure of the actual diameter but it’s just a standard rod and clutch as on other Tama stands. Not thinner than normal.

Thanks.

Can anyone help with a measurement?

I don’t have a Tama clutch handy…

The Rod is a slightly different size(or threading) then a standard Pearl/DW Rod, but my regular Tama, Pearl, Gibraltar, Remo and DW clutch fits on it. If the cymbal doesn't fit on those, I wouldn't imagine it would fit on the stand.

The plastic sleeve on the clutch measures 14/32 as I see it. It will not fit inside the hole of an old K Zildjian Constantinople cymbal. The DW ultralight clutch also will not fit. It measures the same. I don’t have an accurate ruler with mm. The hole on the cymbal measures 13/32. If my calculations and measurements are correct nether the DW nor the Tama clutches will fit.

Thanks!

I think the old Avedis Zildjian standard was 7/16” before they went to 1/2”? So vintage As won’t work, meaning that the even older and sometimes smaller cymbals won’t either?

Do you know what the bottom cymbal cup/seat post is like? Is that the same as the clutch, ~14/32”?

I might be better off with Canopus. Their Light Weight has a 10.6mm clutch, apparently (smaller than their Hybrid)… Not sure if anyone can confirm.

Thanks man. I think I might go with that. Prefer the TAMA in 1-2 other ways, though. So was hoping it might have a narrow clutch. Because I can always replace the bottom cup with the Canopus product.

Maybe I should do the Gear Acquisition Syndrome thing and buy both and try to swap parts around.

Of course, it’s probably easier to lathe some parts down. I just don’t have a lathe…

You can always contact Tama support directly to get an official explanation and thorough answer to a Tama related question. I recently contacted Tama and was pleasantly surprised that the rep got back each time (3 separate questions) in the next day or the same day by email. Their support email is on their web site (USA).

I doubt the newer Tama hi hat stand bottom cymbal cups will work on 10 mm bell holes. Their 1970's and 1980's vintage stands (ie cups) don't fit with 10 mm holes either.
They're too tight. You can bypass the cup by adding another felt (work around). But they do work fine on the 7/16" (11.1 mm) holes that "most" vintage cymbals exhibit from the 1930's to 1950's.

One work around is to sand down your hi hat bottom cup centers. I've done that a couple times now. Takes about 15 min to reduce it about 0.5 mm in width.
I do find that the Tama 70's and 80's stand clutches do fit the 10 mm bell holes.....but not a lot of slop like you get with a 11.1 mm (7/16") bell hole. But they work. So do the 80's Yamaha clutches.
Not sure the current Tama hi hat clutches will fit but I suspect they would as well.

The Tama Classic hihat clutch will not fit vintage size holes. I have the stand. And the bottom cup center will have to be sanded. However, the clutch that came with my Yamaha 740 hihat stand does fit the smaller size vintage holes. That is the clutch I use with my Classic stand for my K Istanbul Old Stamp hats.

Transition stamp 13 with the 7/16" hole.
Fits on the cup with a fairly thick felt.
Fits on the clutch if you remove the plastic insert.

The clutch works if you slide off the plastic sleeve. The cup works with a moderately thick felt.

On my old K Constantinople the threads will not go into the hole so removing the plastic sleeve doesn’t matter. Also it will not fit in the plastic sleeve of the cup. I’m not an expert on hole sizes of various eras so that is all I have to offer.

Any clutch will work as long as the pull rod will fit through it. Should be something available out there that will both fit the pull rod and vintage cymbals.

You need a clutch that will fit in the hole though and will accept the rod.
