How are the finishes applied? Are they painted on or are they veneers that they attach? I’m asking because I’ve seen some pics on reverb where you can see what look like seams and they kinda remind me of wraps.

They're all painted. The diagonal seam you can see is the outer ply of the shell.

Thanks for the explanation
One of the coolest details of the Star series, is they position the air vent (a therefore the seam) perfectly on the "equator" and dead centred between the lugs:

There are lots of cool little details in the Star series, but I would say the coolest detail is that the bass drum claws only grab the front edge of the hoop and float the remainder of the way to minimize contact as seen in Phantomlimb777's post:

And the design of the bass drum spurs; the drum “floats”, the spike is separated from the leg itself.

I picked up a Star Walnut earlier this month. I wanted the fast rack toms, 16x16 FT and 22x16 kick. Finish be damned, I went for the lowest price I could find on a new kit. Now that I got it I quite like the finish and the drums sound absolutely killer. Finish is Cinnamon Japanese Chestnut.

Thanks Skrym. I'll also add that I think the Star Walnut's are an incredible value in the high end segment. What with Starclassic Maples, with a nice finish, going for over $3100 now, if you can get a set of these for less than $3500 shipped you're killing it value wise. I was able to do just that.

I do not think you compromised at all with that finish. Looks great!

$3100? I paid $4000 for mine, but they are pretty.

They were painting that finish when I visited the factory in 2017.
That’s Mike Shimada, then president of Tama standing next to the shells.

I was not aware they did this on any other model/s. I only thought/noticed they did it on the Star.
