I know a lot of people hate Mapex for the name or on principle.

I know a lot of people hate the new Saturn mounting hardware.

This isn't about that. We're here to talk strictly about sound profile.

Has anyone here played both?

If so, what were your impressions and how would you say they compared in sound and feel?

Was one more resonant?

Did one have a wider tuning range?

Did one have a richer tone?

Was decay better on one or the other? (The new Mapex mounting hardware is supposed to allow for variances on that.)

I wasn’t aware that Mapex was doing a walnut/birch offering now. I have enjoyed the Tamas when I’ve played them. I am interested to hear if anyone has played both!

Their new Saturn Evolution kits can go both ways. You can even mix and match when ordering...like maple for rack toms, birch for floors. I'm looking forward to hearing from anyone who's played both.

SIDENOTE: As a fanboy, I love the new satin finishes Mapex is using.
