Buddy of mine gave me this from a lot he picked up at an estate sale, the throw seems to operate properly and I can get the reissue buttplate and some sticksavers easy enough to get her running again...hard to tell the date, maybe 58? Someone put some wood epoxy on edges (looks like dap) but smooth.

After some Google work it appears 58 was the year they switched to 6ply gum/maple, but I'm going to take a stab this is still 3 ply w/poplar.

Anyone know what year they started producing the microsensitive throw? Also, think this has any value (don't want to really sell, just curious)

Heck yeah—not mega millions, but it’s worth a few hundred for sure.

If you plan to play it regularly, consider storing the original throw for later, and installing the new current version of the Microsensitive.

I actually am going to work on it with my son who's wanted to learn to play - he'll appreciate later his first snare was killer!

And that's exactly what I'm going to do, but I'll probably sell this throw to fund the reissue (I'm not a purist)...

You've got yourself a real piece of drum history there . Keith Moon was a big fan of these snares and used them regularly . Levon Helm, too .

I took a close look at the date.
Hard to be absolutely certain, but I see a break between the curve of the "8" and the curve of the "5".

MHO...July 28 1953

Nice looking drum, especially the inner ply. Ril Purdy ;)

Micro throw pre-dates the switch to six ply. The switch to 6 ply was sometime in the mid/late 1950s but there doesn't seem to be a firm definitive date. 1958 is probably as good a guess as any. There seems to have been some overlap at the transition point as they used up their supply of 3 ply shells while also starting to use the new 6 ply shells shipped in from Jasper. There are a fair number of "factory" sets with a mix of 6 and 3 ply drums.

I've struggled with 53, 58, or 59 even looking with a loupe due to some of the ink bleed!

Years ago I had a three ply Gretsch kit that had an easy to read date stamp from 1957. It might have been during the transition, but the introduction of the six ply shell in 1958 sounds about right to me.
