Odd discussion... I have heard the Bonham rumor for years and it has ALWAYS been refuted.

Let's see....

Bonham did not meet Page until AFTER this song was recorded.

JPJ sez it wasn't Bonham.

Does not sound like Bonham...

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

But, maybe it is Bonham!

I have a question...why is Clem Cattini being slagged for having a sound like Bonham but not playing as Bonham might or might not have on a session that predates anything he would have heard from Bonham? Clem Cattini was doing high profile sessions before Bonham hit puberty. I think what he did here was 100% perfection. I can understand thinking it might have been Bonham playing slightly restrained, but Hurdy Gurdy Man was a big benchmark for rock drumming and tones back in the day.

Ok guys I am considering renaming this thread to Tell me this doesn’t sound like Clem Cattini. Would that be better?
Yes. Because no one would pay attention to it and would remove Donovan from the top of New Posts.
A position he hasn't held since 1967.

Just name it 'Subject: Donovan'
2) Authors in a sane world could end their own threads

Yea ^ name it that ^
.

third alternative would be
'Who's more popular than Donovan Drummers?"

Absolutely not. Take your punishment of being forever stained by this grievous musical trivia error.
True. This will prove to be a valuable learning moment for me in the years to come. Thank you.

Sounds more like Mitch Mitchell (which its not) than JB. JB plays with much more syncopation than that. Does sound like a Ludwig Supra, give ya that much.

It was not Bonham. The dates are all off.
Hurdy Gurdy Man is recorded in April 1968.
Jimmy Page played his last Yardibirds show in July 1968 and only THEN started hunting around for the new bandmates that would make LZ. First to be added was Plant, who recommended Bonham, not known to Page at the time.
The 4 of them first played together in August 1968.

So how would Page use JB for this session, pretty much before he even knew of him?

Bonham did play on a Lulu record though.

Donovan wrote a song about this conun - drum ."Atlantis "

Some mysteries are best left unsolved , but there is a bass drum figure in Hurdy Gurdy Man that can mean only one thing ...
