Bill Haley and His Comets-greater in influence -- From 2 hits? Really? He's no Little Richard.
Jerry Lee Lewis greater in debauchery and rebellion--Not a band.
Elvis Presley and the Jordanaires-greater in appeal--Not a band.
Little Richard-greater in style--Not a band.
The Beachboys-greater in harmony--Not really the most rockin' band, right. Did they even play on their records?
The Wrecking Crew-greater in ability and record sales--An ever-changing assortment of session players who were not a band.
Grateful Dead-greater in live ticket sales--This is a matter of personal taste, but I simply don't like this band. At all.
Van Halen-greater in guitar sales--Right on this one... Replace the Eagles at No. 5.
Jimi Hendrix Experience-just "greater" lol--One guy wrote all the songs, sang and played with two sidemen -- Not a band.
Come on man! At least give me Chubby Checker?!

(Hopefully we are all....well, the ones of us that are left anyway, still laughing.....lol)

So one guy writing most (not all) of the songs doesn't equal a band - but two guys doing it is a band. Zeppelin, Van Halen, The Beatles, The Stones, Credence (one guy - so none of these were bands?

Sorry - are you serious or just doing your provocateur thing?

You can have Chubby Checker if you want.
Is that your final answer?
:)
There is one from your list you can't choose though:
Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Founded Westminster, London England (theres that country again) in 1966.
If your argument is that
he was born here then
by that rationale
you have to
go outside right now
and shout
"Van Halen is not an American band" (which they are).
The brothers were not born here.
:p
..count me in the still laughing camp.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

NOT giving this one up Snappy. Westminster be damned! Jimi Hendrix is as American as a Betsy Ross, and our conversion will end right here until you say "uncle" on this one!

I will, however, discuss Led Zeppelin's rape and pillage of American artists who had to enlist lawyers to get writing credits....and why they should even be honored with a top five slot! :angry4:

Zeppelin should be pushed down the list just because of their terrible lyrics.

I always thought that Robert Plant sounded like a German guy whose only experience with the English language was Willie Dixon songs and Lord of the Rings.

Nah...Robert Plant and Jimmy Page called up Alistair Crowley and made a deal to steal Janis Joplin's voice...

Either that, or Plant was lip-syncing to Janis recordings...lol.

Ok, let's put this to bed (lol): Certified world-wide record sales ....not sure what other tangible evidence there is to be offered in the case, other than concert ticket sales, which proved too tiring for me to pursue at this time of night. Depending on my ability to keep my interest in the topic up, I may look into that-primarily out of deference to The Dead...lol. Anyways...these are the guys who sold the wax and made the cash....

Certified World-Wide Record Sales as of
2013:

1. The Beatles 250 million
2. U2 150 million
3. Led Zeppelin 111.5 million
4. The Eagles 100 million
5. Pink Floyd 74.5 million
6. AC/DC 71 million
7. Aerosmith 66.5 million
8. The Rolling Stones 66 million
9. Queen 61 million
10. ABBA 58 million

Certified World-Wide Record sales as of 2015:

1. The Beatles 265 million
2. Led Zeppelin 140 million
3. The Eagles 130 million
4. Pink Floyd 115+ million
5. AC/DC 110 million
6. Queen 105+ (this is before the movie so...)
7. U2 105 million
8. The Rolling Stones 100+ million
9. Aerosmith 90+ million
10. Metallica 90 million

link: https://list25.com/25-top-selling-music-artists-of-all-time/2/

Lastly, from Wikipedia's "List of Best-Selling Music Artists" also "Certified Record Sales-2017 (couldn't leave them out, could we? lol):

1. The Beatles 277.4 million
2. The Eagles 149.6 million
3. Queen 140.5 million
4. Led Zeppelin 140 million
5. Pink Floyd 120.6 million
6. AC/DC 115.3 million
7. U2 109.7 million
8. The Rolling Stones 99.1 million
9. Metallica 96.1 million
10. Coldplay 86.5 million

link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists

Note: unfortunately, due to restraints of the OP, fantastic "single player" artists-like Elton John, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen to name a few, have been excluded from the tabulations above.

Note-2: I would venture to guess with updated figures we may see some "bouncing" of the charts below, but not significantly-other than for Queen due to the release of "Bohemian Rhapsody" the movie; this I would imagine would have caused a sudden uptick in sales for that particular band.)

Thanks for playing and GOOD NIGHT!

ps-I think I see an American band in the top five....but I may be wrong?

Top 25 things to argue to no end about:
25. best drums
24. greatest guitarists
23. best drummers
22. whether to have a Designated Hitter in the National League ('no')
.....
1. greatest bands

Fleetwood Mac is a rock band? They used to be a blues band, and then.....
They became a lounge act.
