Why would you pay homage to something by utterly butchering it?

Hold on there, cowboy! As one who has played in several big bands, NP might have been out of his element with the BRBB (as BR was playing funk), but, in my opinion, he did an admirable job holding it down. I think he did as good a job as any prog rocker could be expected to do. Have you seen Marco Minnemann‘s attempt at big band playing?
