Without question, the countries we can broadly define as Scandinavia (or the Nordic Nations, if you're a stickler), contain more great drummers per capita than any other nation in the world.

With a combined population of 26 million, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland have produced a wealth of great bands in genres ranging from polite jazz to avant-garde rock, hard rock and, of course, a wealth of intense black metal.

Weighing the contributions, artistry and impact on their peers, here are Scandinavia's Top 25 drummers of all time.

25. Alex Riel, Palle Mikkelborg Quintet (Denmark)

24. Jukka Nevalainen, Nightwish (Finland)

23. Janne Haavisto—Laika &the Cosmonauts (Finland)

22. Anders Johansson – Hammerfall (Sweden)

21. Josephine Forsman—Savannah Hotnights (Sweden)

20. Sami Kuoppamäki, Zook (Finland)

19. Håvard Takle Ohr, Oslo Ess, Kvelertak (Norway)

18. Lars Ulrich – Metallica (Denmark)

17. Henrik Engqvist,
Engqvist Orkester, Ole Albrechtsen Trio (Denmark)

16. Gas Lipstick, Mika Kristian Karppinen – HIM (Sweden)

15. Chris Dangerous – The Hives (Sweden)

14. Guðmundur Óli Pálmason—Solstafir (Iceland)

13. Martin Lopez – Opeth, Amon Amaarth

12. Kári Streymoy – Tyr (Faroe Islands)

11. Anders Friden – In Flames (Sweden)

10. Kjetil Germundrod – Kvelertak, Tempel (Norway)

9. Dominator, Nils Fjellström – 1349, Nordjevel (Norway)

8. Toumas Lehtonen, Turisas (Finland)

7. Jon Christensen (Norway)

6. HellHammer Jan Axel Blomberg – Mayhem (Norway)

5. Trym Torson – Emperor (Norway)

4. Ola Brunkert– ABBA (Sweden)

3. Mickey Dee – Motorhead, Scorpions (Sweden)

2. Frost, Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad – Satyricon, 1349 (Norway)

1. Tomas Haake – Meshuggah (Sweden)

No Erik Smith? He would eat most of the above lunch, dinner, & nightcap.

Whitey Glann's parents moved to Canada shortly after WW ll . He was born in 46 so , if you're into the semantic dialectics of nationality - a Finnish born Canadian drummer .

Dicogs.com:

Pentti Glan, also known as Whitey Glan (born July 8, 1946, Finland - died November 7, 2017) was a Finnish drummer, most known for his session work with Alice Cooper (2). Started out in the 1960s with The Rogues, who later became Mandala (11).

Just as much Bruce Willis is German, Freddie Mercury was Tanzanian and Keanu Reeves is Lebanese.

Mikey Dee was also is King Diamond.

I think Canada has a surplus of fantastic drummers too. Especially in the more extreme metal bands. Oddly, mostly from different parts of Quebec (Province not city).

Wow I was going to say Benny Greb - and that's it! Talk about my ignorance.

But any list with Lars on it as a Scandanavian seems supsect....

I guess I have only heard of five players on that list.

Lists. Why do people even compile such lists? What standard, criteria, or bench marks are used to put anyone in any order, or even on such lists? I think the #1 comment I always see about such lists is "What about, why not, where's ...", etc.

No Erik Smith? He would eat most of the above lunch, dinner, & nightcap.

I don't know if he'd eat the rest of the names for lunch but, I do really appreciate the way they shot that video, not changing scenes every nano-second.

Without question,
Well I doubt that!

Hmm let's see 25 drummers - 26 million people... let's call it 1 drummer per million capita

So you're saying that it goes without question, that the North East Coast of America (56 million people) hasn't produced 56 drummers of the stature on this list (keeping in mind, there are many on your list that are far from having credits that are household names - even in Scandinavia)??? Or how about CA? Really that populace of 40 million including Southern California and San Francisco Bay area hasn't produced 40 drummers of that level of significance??? Heck I could probably name close to that off the top of my head.

"Without question".... sheesh... :)

NO WHERE does it say these are the only 25 great drummers in those countries. In fact, other posters have named good candidates for the rankings 26 through 1,000.

For context, I think even people who live in Italy, Australia/New Zealand or Argentina would be hard pressed to name 25 legendary drummers from those countries -- all of which have larger populations than the Nordic region.

Sheesh.
