Firstly, I want to thank everyone who has bought stuff from me or helped me sell stuff here, it is very appreciated, and I couldn’t have swung this deal without the help of this forum.

If anyone can lend any insight into this kit, it seems like it was either pieced together, or is an amalgamation of Conn era Ludwig stuff.

This is what I got:

20” Bass drum with Leedy & Ludwig badge (‘53 according to the stamp) - one extra hole from replacing the original cymbal mount with a Gretsch.

13” rack tom with Ludwig & Ludwig Chicago badge

Three small extra holes in a triangle pattern, not sure what that would be for, as both toms have mufflers top and bottom.

I haven’t taken the heads off the toms.

16” floor tom with Ludwig & Ludwig Chicago badge

14” snare drum with Ludwig & Ludwig Elkhart badge (‘49 according to the stamp)

15” trans stamp hats 884/908

21” trans stamp 2213

20” 50’s small stamp sizzle, has small mount hole 22xx

20” 60’s heavy ride 23xx

All hardware, including WFL Speed King inside a telescoping canister throne.

Tuxedo bags for all drums.

I set it up lefty, because I’m dumb. I’m not going to use the bass drum mounts, and set up the right way.

I’m fairly versed in the Leedy & Ludwig era (1950-55) and am somewhat knowledgeable in the Conn era. Of the bass offerings from Leedy & Ludwig, the 20” was the least common. The imperial lugs were almost definitely added later. Conn had a beef with Ludwig and Bill Ludwig Sr had a beef with Conn. Ludwig Sr was retained by Conn after they bought his company around 1930 but he left around ‘37 to form his own company (WFL Drums). Consequently, Conn regarded Leedy as the preferred brand and superior to their Ludwig & Ludwig line. In doing so (post 1950 brand merger) they used the Leedy “beavertail” lug on high end drums and imperial lugs on lower line stuff.

The rail mount and the Gretsch cymbal arm mount was also added later. During this era, toms were normally mounted via a clamp on the bass hoop.

first I can recall (maybe never paid attention..) seeing a Floor Tom with those Lugs.
(rivals Gretsch!) resembles the broadkaster)

Thank you! There aren’t any extra holes for the imperial lugs, so I’m excited about that.

wait a second. do you have the bass drum backwards and it's not a left handed set
wheres the spurs

I’m reading that the L&L Chicago badges were 30s, this is getting even more confusing.

I’m not sure how to tell through the paint. Is there a way to? Thanks!
Maybe check the snare bed? If they were done like more modern 50's and 60's Ludwig's, they would have put the paint on inside, and then cut the beds. You should be able to see it right through the bottom head.
