A patient that needs a bit of TLC. This is a 60s Gretsch with great potential, but has endured a few surgeries by other doctors. She will be restored to nearly full glory by none other than Dr. Dumpy Flusterbottom.

Edges are nice here!

Here she is:

I stopped restoring vintage drums a few years ago.
If you've got the hardware, I've got a late 70s Ludwig snare shell (and WMP wrap I believe) sitting here taking up space.
I had it built out, but changed my mind and pulled everything ... then realized I had given away the hardware AFTER the fact.
Not the worst thing that's slipped my mind over the years.

Wish I had the hardware.

Things like that happen a lot, as I can personally attest!

Lug removal surgery! Does anybody know what size screw affixes an old Gretsch lug to its shell? The lugs were installed while the paint was wet. Also- the missing screw likely was missing while the new “finish” went on…

Those holes are daunting!

Lugs came with the project and I just bought the hoops! I will use an INDe strainer and butt plate.

Any lead on what size screw goes in these lugs?

First order is to remove the paint. Glue will not stick to paint. I will sand this off to avoid damaging the original silver sealer. Stripper would remove quickly, but will damage the inner seal. So, a sanding we will go…

That’s very cool. No extra holes or funny business?

Nope all clean . I saved the funny business for my free RB’s . This is a test for them . I sourced all the period correct hardware in VG condition except for the Batter hoop and Micro Sensitive Throw off which is new OEM . Everything else including the tension rods original like new . I just flew in this morning . Left my bike in Washington but I’m flying out in a couple of days to see my kid . I’ll start finishing this when I get back . Post pics of your progress . They will look very much like this when their finally done .

I think they are 8/32 but I’m using new vintage ones from Drums on Sale . They drive into the old lugs much better . My lugs came with the slotted round heads but I’m more interested in those lugs being properly threaded and tight . Note : make sure what ever you do that you use the proper length because there is a difference between the old slotted screws and the newer hex head RB’s . Very slight but the difference will leave you with lugs that aren’t fully torqued down and you will have to add a washer .

Thanks for that.

I have to determine whether or not the threads are done or just full of gunk on one lug. A screw won’t go in. I may have to do more surgery on that lug if it’s the former…

I will probably damp a cotton bud with acetone and see what the story is. I suspect that it’s just gunk; okay- HOPING that’s it’s only gunk!
