I’ve been playing around with different setups with some orphan Rogers toms, three up one down.

If anyone regularly uses this sort of setup, I would much appreciate a couple pictures of your setup from the drivers seat as a sort of cheat sheet towards ergonomics and cymbal positioning.

One other issue I’m having is with the difference in response of the middle tom directly above the bass drum, vs the other two hanging over clean air. Anyone else notice this or have a solution other than sky high mounting?

Thanks in advance

How about 3 up- 2 down?

Yeah, my acoustic kit is pretty much this actually except the second FT. I don't like going that far back behind me.

I see your (and other's) 3 up like curving around your playing space and if that works great but I like this setup better - three straight across and one down, like a sideways L.

I play 3 up on occasion and found this array to work best for me. Note the two toms stay over the bass drum and the 3rd goes off to your left with a quality mount off the cymbal stand. Here's my Prolite in full dress 3 up 2 dn.

Fantastic finish! I had no idea that Prolites came in a blue sparkle (if that’s what it’s called).

8/10/12/14/16/22?

Thanks! Yeah they used to. These are circa 2013. Sonor has this bad habit of discontinuing some of their best finishes. That's blue sparkle lacquer, not a wrap. You're correct on the sizes. Kind of rare depths though as the kick is 22x15 and the rack toms are 10x7 and 12x8. Usually they are 22x17.5, 10x8,12x9. Floor toms are square sizes.

Interesting…I love the slightly shallower bass drums and it’s cool that you were able to get this kit with those depths on the toms as well. I bet they are super resonant!

Various options over the years. I initially started out using three rack toms in the late 70s and I very quickly switched over to timbales. At that time, I had the first two on a stand between my hi-hat and bass drum and had the third one on another tom stand to the right of my bass drum. I used that with either three toms or four (one pair on each side of the bass drum). When I started messing around with racks in the 90s, I placed all toms/timbales on the rack - works great. I rarely use more than one rack tom anymore, but when I do, I put them on a rack. And as you can see, I don't use a floor tom when I use three racks and I don't miss it.

I think mostly people are using a 10" (or 8") tom closest to the hi-hat. It's tough to go three up starting with a 12".
I've used this as my main set up for 35 years, but always starting with a 10" as tom 1. My hi-hat moves slightly left and my toms 2 and 3 are in the traditional position over the bass drum.

Not that I’m planning on doing it, but I would put the 1st tom to the left as well. However, I would scramble them as I really enjoy the non linear approach, plus I would want the biggest rack tom in Ringo position.

I’m seeing that keeping everything more to the left is nearly universal, so I’ll give that a try. I was trying to keep the height down by having the 15x12” to the right of the bass. i appreciate all the input
