Three up one down

My favorite set up for years! My Ludwig Black Galaxy Classic Maple. Phenomenal drums! 22,10,12,13,14FL(not shown), 16FL.

I was three up for many years in the late 80's and still enjoy throwing an extra tom back in if the music calls to me! I was probable overly influenced by the 8 & 10" concert toms so many of us "older" guys ran up over our hi-hats in the early 80's that I never got comfortable pushing my hat to far to my side so the 10" always went high up over it.

It seems smaller toms are the popular setup for three across. I have 12,14,15, with an 18” floor to play with at the moment. I may have to wait for some clamps to finish off a rack I picked up to get this to work well. The 15” is a little heavy for my cymbal stands without the 14” as a counterbalance

I’m seeing that keeping everything more to the left is nearly universal, so I’ll give that a try. I was trying to keep the height down by having the 15x12” to the right of the bass. i appreciate all the input

You could put the bass drum to the left , and your toms could as low as you want .

I think mostly people are using a 10" (or 8") tom closest to the hi-hat. It's tough to go three up starting with a 12".
I've used this as my main set up for 35 years, but always starting with a 10" as tom 1. My hi-hat moves slightly left and my toms 2 and 3 are in the traditional position over the bass drum.

Not that I’m planning on doing it, but I would put the 1st tom to the left as well. However, I would scramble them as I really enjoy the non linear approach, plus I would want the biggest rack tom in Ringo position.

That's been known to work.

I think my response falls squarely into “first world problems” but thats not an option if I want to keep four kits setup unless I add an addition. I don’t usually have a problem with toms set pretty high anyway as I’m used to 14/16/18/26 and my Norths, its just hardware limitations at the moment. Rogers toms are way heavier than 3-ply Ludwig/Slingerland and the higher I mount the 15” the sketchier it gets

I had one of those in chrome finish. It weighed 238 lbs.*

Actually I prefer flying my two rack toms over the bass. Just not a fan of bass mounted toms.

No pics, I managed to mount 10-12-14(x12) on top of a mountless bass drum years ago using just two stands andmulti-clamps. 16x16 in the standard ft position. There were lots of tom fills in that production, and I liked not having to reach back for a second floor tom.

My take on 3 up 1 down is a bit different then most. I've tried many 2 down setups and can't get used to a FT so far behind me.

I like to roll to the left and right. Hence the 14" is all the way to the left.

The general shift to the left was definitely helpful, if a little precarious. Appreciate all the input and pics of different setups!
