Backline kit. Not fancy, but it got the job done. My all-female band was one of a handful of bands from across the state who were chosen to perform at the Festivals & Events Showcase in Charlotte last night. We had a booth on the showcase floor, and each band got 20 minutes to play for ~300 festival organizers. All the bands were so good. I think we got booked as we were coming off the stage. LOL. Eight offers as of this morning, as well as some major opportunities. It should be a busy summer!

With my mild case of ADHD, I've always had a real hard time with the giant screens/TVs with a game/event playing in the background of a live band. I find that somewhat disrespectful to the folks giving it their all up on the stage and usually just distracts me from concentrating on either the performer and/or the event.

I mean, nowadays everybody has got a phone on wich they can track in real time the scores of wichever game they might've bet on or be interested in. If I want to go see live music, I go see live music and if I want to go watch a game, I go watch a game.

And just to be clear, this isn't a jab at you, I get that as a band you don't always have the leverage necessary to impose the conditions under wich you play etc and that gig probably pays good money. I get all that, I guess my beef is with the people who treat live music like it's supposed to just be an after thought.

Anyhoo, enough of my rant, you guys look like you were enjoying yourself.

From a church gig this morning as part of a great piano trio backing up a killer gospel singer. I posted a different view in the birdseye thread. Switched the cymbals around for a bit - first gig in a while since having a baby and getting some new pies - but the drums are a Yamaha Beech Custom bop kit with a Yamaha Sensitive Series 14x6.5” in natural finish.

Interesting to see so many folks taking to a 4 pc kit with a couple of cymbals.

Below is my kit at Damewood studios where we held an event Dec of 2022 ... it was big fun playing with a whole host of musicians. .... I assemble my kits based on the drums sound so this one has bits from may Yamaha versions. The snare is a concert snare, which provides a wide range of dynamics.

The other kit (green one) reminded me of the many kits I see folks using in these pictures. I used this kit from 2001 until 2017. It was my minimalist gigging kit. I would leave the large floor tom and extra cymbal behind while gigging.... unless the customer requested loud Rock and Roll and Blues... That large floor tom is a Ludwig 18in from the early 70s (lots of low end grunt).
That's of course not me playing drums, although my wife would probably argue I acted 2 years old from time to time, over the past 40+ years.

The amazing part about these two pictures, taken decades apart, is the cymbals ... I still have the same cymbals which are about 20-30 years old at this point.

I know several in the DFO family have played MADLIFE in Atlanta and my show was back there for their 4th time Friday night. It is without doubt the toughest venue I have worked in the last 25 years from a logistics standpoint. The load in and out out is awful, the stage is tiny (and this is a seven piece show), if there are two different shows on the bill that night it's a train wreck to strike and clear the stage so the 10:30 show can set up and sound check... I hate EVERYTHING about the physical load.

BUT what a great room to play from a musicians standpoint. A full sell out is only 288 including the SRO and tickets are fairly expensive (at least my my standards) to cover the cost of entertainment, production and generate the venue a profit. The result is 288 people who really want to be there and they are all in your face on two levels creating an intense and exciting environment!

We are back in late August for both shows that night and it does make for a more enjoyably evening even if exhausting to run the two hour back to back but as with the previous sellouts, I now it will be exciting again!

Though I know your kit is sparkle red, in the mauve/pink-ish hue of the lighting, your drums look orange.

Definitely - was thinking the same time! Lights can make such a difference. That's one of the big benefits of silver sparkle -- less weird interactions like that, while still getting the glitter factor :)
