As a restorer of vintage drums there is always been the conundrum of gluing the wrap with 3M contact cement or use the Tape method.
Both specialist swear by both method .... until...
I watched on you tube a tour of the Ludwig Facility.. and paused , rewind, paused rewind..... and realized the wrap Ludwig applies on their drum is already glued. The lady lines up the wrap removes the backing and the press glues it tot he shell... so easy....
Why can't we buy wrap like that ? For the money we pay for a single sheet we should have it already pre-glued with backing paper.. don't you AGREE ??

a pre glued wrap sounds like a no brainer to me.Ludwig on the other hand installs on near perfect surfaces, removing old wraps can be a nightmare and sometimes creates difficult surfaces to work with.I wonder how that wrap would work on imperfections... contact cement becomes the wood.

I remember speaking with Nodar Rode on this subject and when I brought up the tape method, he doubled over in pain. Never do it this way as the wrap, as tight as it is, is not part of the drum and doesn’t let the drum’s voice speak as clearly as when glued. All I want to know is what glue did Rogers use in the 60’s cause that stuff was like stucco.

Good old Nodar!! He redid the edges on my 1964 RB snare drum and that drum never sounded better! Nice guy, too.

I think Ludwig has a high bond film applied to the wrap. Something similar to Killer Red sign tape. Drum Foundry used to sell wrap that way.

I use tape to do my wraps, but I do it like Ludwig. I do a solid lamination of Killer Red tape on the wrap, and then wrap it just like using contact cement. It’s solid adhesion with no air gaps.
