Whilst assembling material for an upcoming Top Vegemite-Eating Drummers, I stumbled across an astonishing news article revealing that Australia (pop. 25.9 million) -- a country heretofore known chiefly for Crocodile Dundee, the Croc Hunter (R.I.P), AC/DC and Kangaroos -- has an economy heavily weighted in the manufacture of drum sets, with as many drum factories as the number of Australian bands I can name off the top of my head: Divinyls, Rose Tattoo, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, The Easybeats, INXS, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel (?) and Men at Work!

If you break this down on a per-capita basis, New York State alone should have at least six drum companies. Slackers.

Here's the article from Mixdown magazine.

We check out the A-Z of the Aussie percussion landscape.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been checking out some of the best local luthiers, pedal makers and outlets hooking Aussie musicians up with all the best local gear available on the market.

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on some of the best local drum manufacturers around Australia to check out what’s on offer for devoted percussionists both at home and around the world, proving once again that if anywhere else in the world can do drums, Aussies are almost certainly guaranteed to do it better. Dig in!

Summary

  • In addition to pedals, amps and guitars, a number of Australian music companies also specialise in the making of drums and drum hardware.
  • Several manufacturers, such as Red Rock Drums, Sia Drums and Evetts, utilise Australian tonewoods in their creations for unique tones and aesthetics.
  • Others, such as Pansini Percussion and Gas Custom Drums, specialise in making bespoke acrylic kits using advanced tooling methods.

It's more common that you might think.
I could think of at least 7 drum companies in Finland (population 6 million). And I'm not taking about "drum assemblers", I only counted those that make their own shells.
4 of those produce kits plus snares, 3 only snares.

Isn’t Finland an outlier with the highest per-capita number of metal bands (70 metal bands per 100,000 people) — and most metallers have a lot of drums.

They missed Paul Warry - Metro Drums.

Honorable tribute should have been given to the now defunct Brady for their significant contribution to that scene (methinks).

I’m glad Steele got some paragraphs. He was just in the states for 3 weeks and he came to my backwater to hang out for a few days.

That might have something to do with it, lol.
Funny coincidence. The drummer in the picture is Kai Hahto, who plays for the Nightwish. Also a really good teacher, specialized on feet technique and sitting/posture issues.
So, he has lately also started to manufacture drum seats that help to feel your body better, the seat is designed to inform you about your possible bad habits, hence the name Information Seat.
Super solid, non flexible, wide aluminum plate with relatively thin cushioning. Mine should be ready any day now. ;)

So, we're apparently trying to hijack the hardware business also. Ha.

This may be politically incorrect, but if Russia gets upset with Finland, just block their 800 mile border with Heavy
Metal drum sets, and drummers manning them.
Russia won’t stand a chance.
But seriously! I hope Finland is always safe from advances.

Correction! A country heretofore and hereafter known chiefly for Davis Cup championships and all time tennis greats like Jack Crawford, Lou Hoad, Ken Rosewall, Rod Laver, Margaret Court, John Newcombe, Evonne Goolagong, Ashleigh Barty, etc.

Carry on!

Interesting but looks like it could be a bit uncomfortable. Where can I find more information on it ?

Can you please list those companies? I'd like to know. Tack på förhand!

Nah, Russians still have nightmares about Simo Hayha.

We've turned out some pretty handy motorcycle racers and Olympic swimmers over the years as well. Not to mention some very very fine drummers, arguably one of the very best in Virgil Donati.
