Well, that was fantastic!
I had no idea, despite some exposure to music from that era, that those cymbals we hear were being choked, and that was called a "sock." (I thought it was just a combination of small, heavy cymbals and poor recording.)
Old-timers used to refer to hi-hats as "sock" cymbals and now I see the connection - they allowed the drummer to do the "sock" effect with one hand as opposed to both.
