I also have a Ludwig 12 x 22. It's one of my best sounding bass drums. I imagine a 12x 20 would be good as well (12x18 works well too).

I had a chance to pick up a 10x18 Ludwig bass that was professionally converted from a marching (I think, or a field?) drum. Problem was it did not have a mount as it could not support a tom......

Does the 20 do so, or do you use a snare stand for the tom?

I have a slingerland 12x22 that is an excellent drum. Yes punchy quick attack but warm mahogany sound. I have two 12x18’s. One is vistalite the other a custom Keller 6- ply. They are both unique not particularly versatile but very individual.

I've got a 12x22 Ludwig 3 ply in Champagne Sparkle.. Absolutely Amazing! Plays great & sounds great...I've had many compliments from both sound guys & drummer friends on it.

FWIW - I think this drum is called a New Yorker

The Ludwig "New Yorker" outfit came with a 12x22. It was a 12x22 bass with an 8x12 tom and no floor tom (Super or Supra as the included snare depending on when the set was made). I guess in the era right before 18" bass drums came into fashion it was thought of as a compact set to use around the city. That's what I have with my 12x22 bass. Mine is a 1959 set and I've added to it (16 and 18 floor toms). As I mentioned above the bass drum is one of the best sounding I own...perhaps the best sounding of any of them.

Here's a slideshow of that set I did several years ago.

I have a 12x22 WFL with mahogany interior, best sounding bass drum ever!
The single tension drum may be a bit on the high side dollar wise, but I’m sure it will sound good.
I have a single tension 24” and it kills!

Unless you are looking for an extensive project you would be better off investing your money into a blank shell and building it yourself; the cost will be similar.
The only thing you can really use off the eBay drum will be the hoops and perhaps the heads.
The eBay drum is a single tension set-up and you are not going to want that, so you need to find and purchase tension casings, claws, t-rods, spurs, etc, plus drill and mount them all . . . just like building a custom drum.
You should probably just wait for another 12x20 to show up on eBay. . . . this drum is not worth $180 and certainly not more . . . . . NAD

I have a 12x20 Ludwig, clear interior, with rerings. It WAS a marching drum, and I put clamp-on spurs on the hoop. Completely detailed and rewrapped in Oyster Blue. I even put a DW consolette rail on it. It holds a 12" or 13" tom easily. AND I mount two crashes off the top using Atlas tom mounts.

One of my all-time favorite sounding bass drums. I will keep it until the end.

I’m about to buy a 12x20 because they are damn near impossible to find

I don’t know if I should go classic maple, legacy maple, or dw from that ultra flyer kit. I found one vintage kit but condition is so so and price is a bit steep.

Any opinions?
