i did a similar thread in talkbass forums to great success, so i’m wondering how long a thread with the same concept could go on for in here.

not to be confused with posting pics of a vintage kit you have, post old old pics of you playing drums. i’m talking about all of you grandpas! it’s fascinating to see old polaroids or images of bands that aren’t the usual famous acts i see professional pictures of from that 60s and 70s era.

OK, I'll play! The Polaroid is my first set. Would have been 1967. I could have been a stand-in on "That Thing You Do!" The second pic is from 1972.....

1987 , the year I started playing ….This was a teamsters Xmas party, I had been playing the whole year , I lied and said and been drumming for 10 years so I could get an audition …..
I beat out 5 other drummers .
Partly because I had a big kit and they also did Elvis Impersonator gigs . The Leader wanted a guy with a big kit .
I learned Suspicious Minds during my audition , I had never heard it before ..

There aren't any pictures of me playing when I was young, but here's a picture I took of of my brother playing my drums in 1974. This was a mismatched kit made up of Gretsch, Slingerland, Apollo, and a mystery floor tom with a missing badge. Cymbals were two 18" Zildjian crashes, a pair of very heavy Zildjian hats, and a 16" Beverly crash drilled for rivets. No ride cymbal, and you can see I had to use masking tape to hold one of the ancient cymbal stands together. I used two snare stands for the toms, not because I was ahead of my time but because it was all I had, which is the main reason I refuse to use a snare stand for a tom tom today even though it's now the cool thing to do.

But here's the deal: I loved those drums and probably spent more hours playing them between 1972 and 1978 than I've spent on all the drums I've owned since then, combined.

Awesome! I saw Setzer in 86 or 87. One of my earlier shows during HS. Maybe i saw you!
Thanks, but you'd have seen me with them only if you were in VA Beach. My guitarist was good friends with Setzer's bassist at the time, Kenny Aaronson. The band came down to the oceanfront to see us after their own show in Norfolk. One thing led to another, and they took over for the rest of the night. I became their drummer for that night only, though I'd have loved to continue on with them - they were great guys. Brian was incredible on guitar (he cranked my guitarist's Marshall ALL THE WAY UP), and Aaronson remains to this day the best bassist I've ever played with. So tight and solid.
