i really enjoy your posts.
I've only had one Walnut and I wasn't happy...maybe it was the drum...or the tuning...or the player...might be worth retrying. Are you using the 10 much?
You haven't tried seamless walnut.
Sounds amazing!

I don't currently own a walnut snare (well, the walnut / maple) but I do hope to add a new Summit.

I still have this figured walnut / flamed maple Punkinater stave...

And have owned these built from a steam bent shell....

And the last one I have owned / built was this solid walnut shell with a veneer of figured walnut and Birdseye maple...

Everyone here knows my love for Rosewood snare drums, and recently, Spotted Gum wood.

I was about to sell a snare to help pay for another, but it wasn't selling (even though I never wanted to sell it), so it gave me time to re-evaluate. I'm not sure if it's this snare in particular, or walnut period, but this wood is truly something special and becoming a favorite. It is so thick and lush, but also has a deafening crack it. It's nearly a perfect snare.

It's a limited Mapex 30th Anniversary Walnut Black Panther. I had always wanted a Deep Forest walnut from the 90s, and this is the same wood with the upgraded features of today.

I had a very rare opportunity of having all my snares together today, so I snapped a woods and metals picture. Aside from collecting, I have every single base I could ever need covered. I feel very fortunate to have this collection. Cheers!

I had the chance to get it, the 30th anniversary...In fact, i was just asking about Mapex, wasn,t sure if it was kind of high end, my feeling was just a 2nd choice manufacturer, I don't know why...And several guys told me that the 30th anniversary is awesome...i had already my summit 15x8 in the making so, another walnut???
Well, I'm glad I bought it and it was at 30% less at my store...Like you, a beats, very happy with it. Then the summit arrived and i was in love with Walnut so, when I discovered AVA and the fact that Cotter540 was selling his at a good price and in CAN$, I bought it as well. I have now the 3 type of snares in Walnut in my collection, multiply with the Mapex, single ply with the Summit and Stable stave with the AVA...
I would have never thought I could go crazy with walnut like that!!!

Mine own walnut is a custom stave:

I bought the shell and had it prepared with bearing edges for a Sleishman free-floating frame, but later decided to keep the Sleishman with its original (slightly deeper) maple shell and make this its own drum. Trick throw, S-hoops, 14x6. Also, I picked these lugs not only because I like them but because they hide the vent hole which is inside of the lug which faces the player!

It really has a loud sound, full of attack, had to switch out my original wires (Ludwig) for brass Puresounds to dial back the intensity a bit. It's really a unique drum, none of my other snares have the sound this one has and I have over 60 snares!

My other snare that has walnut in it is a "previous version" Mapex Warbird 12x5.5 that I updated to Evans Power Center Reverse Dot and Puresound P1216 wires (current model specs). I love it too.

I love the warbird, if I ever decide on a 12" snare, it will be that one!!!

You know, I had not actually planned on selling it at all but I wound up giving it to a friend that had never owned a solid shell snare, or really any top end snare of any type. He had been instrumental in getting me my UFiP deal, was admiring this snare one day and I just decided, rather spur of the moment that it needed a new home!

The one that I sold. I was going through a full on metal snare phase, all I’d play in the band was a COB/ SS/Aluminium …whatever. I had this Dunnett Monoply at the bottom of the pile. I sold it as I wasn’t using it and now I’m back into both wood and metal I wish I hadn’t. Id buy it back in a heartbeat

Very nice collection. I reached a high of 20 snares a few years ago (Craviottos, Noble Cooley, Ludwig, Dunnett, Joyful Noise, Sonor, Yamaha). I found myself playing the same 3 and culled the herd. Thank you for sharing

Black Panthers are all great snares. That’s a beautiful collection. My experience with walnut is pretty much the same as you, nice tone, growl if you want and they crack!

My main snare is a Gretsch maple with wood hybrid hoops. I love it . It has its own voice.

That's gorgeous! The more I get into it, the more I'm becoming a fan of Stave shell drums over solid shell. I think the grain presentation is insane, and despite the hype sound/resonance wise I think I prefer my Staves.

Speaking of stave and Walnut, I know someone who will need to be posting on this thread soon. Let's see if he gets the memo...
