I've been on the lookout for one of these and it arrived today. Basically still looks new besides some slight oxidation on the nickel hardware and maybe 2 small scratches on the outside surface.
It came with 12-strand wires with original calfskin heads. The bottom snare-side head still has the keystone shaped 'Transparent Imperial Brand W.F.L. Drum Co.' stamp that is still barely visible.
I'm not a calf-skin head expert, nor do I play them at all, but after a slight tune-up, the snare sounds very nice and 'gushy'. I'll be cleaning this one up in the coming weeks. It came with an Anvil Fibre Skin case.

(you are keeping the grandma brown society alive) : ) i have 2- 490s and I see you have an eight lug there-----exotic!!!

*eight Lug 6.5/14 part no. 470 contest model
* six lug 6.5/14 part no. 490 supreme concert
I like using the (part/model) numbers as it shows the link/ linage with modern 400's and 402's!

one of the prettiest catalog pages from 'ye olden days"..

I'd guess that number on the top hoop is some kind of school system number?

I see you have 3 of those drums, is the 8-lugger also a Supreme Concert model?

The number/sticker was put there by the person I purchased it from. He keeps a database of his drums and this is how he keeps track of them all...I've removed the sticker.

And JDA beat me to it, the 8-lugger is a 'Contest' model. I recently changed the snare wires and batter head from what it came with, and it sounds like a whole new drum now - amazing. It's one of those drums you don't want to stop playing.

I believe the 5.5x14 6-lugger is also a 'Supreme Concert' just in a smaller depth.

Yup, the Contest model is an awesome sounding drum. I'm a sucker for 6-luggers, so getting a 6.5 depth made since - as I already have two 5.5x14's. Are the 'Contest' models a little harder to come by? I got mine a year ago, but haven't really paid much attention to how many are usually out there for sale. I've got another 6.5x14 490 on the way :)

Much so... and "guys" want an arm and a leg (when offered up for sale)

It's easy to get carried away with the golden age vintage Ludwig wood snare.
a 1938 with "those" nickle die cast looking hoops is a Dream about snare.

tip of the wooden.. totem. for average players. next step up. from grandma brown: aunt millie.
...pre-ww II 1938 was a year for many great things
