What drummer had the most affect on their bands sound / identity??

Though I’m not a big fan of his, I agree that Stewart Copeland had a huge impact on the sound of The Police.

My heart says The Professor.

Both of those guys were far more than drummers for their bands. Stewart ultimately ending up a composer, arranger, etc. And Neil writing much of the lyrics and "feel" of Rush.
Any old drummer with great chops doesn't often have those other skills.

Micky Dolenz. Just imagine how the Monkees might have sounded with someone - anyone - else drumming on all of those hits!

When a drummer is that idiosyncratic, he molds the band.

Or they kick him out.

I think you could say just about any popular band but when I said The Professor I was thinking more about how he affected Rush after he joined. Someone like AVH for example was always in VH so his sound was already there…maybe I misunderstood the question?

I was thinking maybe who was irreplaceable , had an identifiable sound ?

Jack Irons.

I hated Pearl Jam with him in the band. Matt Cameron brought them back to relevance with me but I still like Dave Abbruzzese the best.

Matt is another guy with just a unique sound. He was a huge part of the Soundgarden sound. He still sounds good with PJ but his feel was made for the heavier Soundgarden sound IMO.
