Vintage Ludwig drums are very overrated, especially their aluminum...sorry. ."ludalloy" snares. Had several supras and acrolites. Most boring sounds imaginable. But this applies also to most other aluminum snares. Too vanilla.
Not sure if it is unpopular or not, but one opinion I really do have, is that you will sound like you, no matter what gear you are playing on. Sure good tuning will help the tone, but your essence will overcome your equipment, for better or worse.
Drummers should change their outlook to being "beat/rhythm-producers", and embrace technology--and sometimes as necessary--eschew acoustic gear altogether, going with sampling pads, keyboards, loopers and possibly the laptop in their rigs. Get more modern!
There is too much attention spent targeting the particular gear, setups, tunings...etc. other players we admire have arrived at through their own unique journeys and the trends of their time. Create your own thing.
1. Four piece drum kits are boring to look at, boring to play, and boring to listen to.
2. The Beatles bore me to tears.
3. Ringo is a very average drummer.
4. People that spend a ton of money on a high end drum kit, getting very little if any gain in sound quality.
