Browsing the 2013 Ludwig catalog today was reminded of Vinnie’s “hello, goodbye” Ludwig interval. Anyone know where he talks about the switch and the jump back to Gretsch?

OT, i really enjoyed Vinnie’s Gretsch unboxing vid. Too bad they had taken it down and shortened it to only show his performance.

I wonder if it comes down to tour support or something? I know Vinnie could make anything sound good but I thought his black galaxy set sounded fantastic. In the end though I do tend to associate him with Gretsch drums. Both Ludwig and Gretsch are my favorite drums though so I may be a little biased.

My little understanding was Vinnie was going through some health/family issues and wanted to massively simplify things distribution-wise.
I believe at the time he was living near North Carolina or Indiana.
Instead of having to make phone calls to multiple vendors, he could call Ludwig and get drums and heads at the same time instead of having to call Gretsch & Remo. Anything to make things easier during a stressful time is helpful.

That is completely inaccurate.

Are you in contact with Vinnie and know something I don't? Seems rude to just shut me down without any clarification. Vinnies dad was sick at that time, or so was said (edited for speculation).

I believe dsop was/ is in charge of Vinnie's social media or ran his website. If anyone were to know it would be him. Seems kind of irresponsible to claim someone was sick on the Internet without having all the facts.

Is this not a drum forum where we do (basically) nothing but speculate on things? I also said "little" understanding, which means I could be wrong. I vividly remember conversations going through the drum community at the time as I was working in a shop during it. Murmurs from Zildjian that they'd waive the "Never rehire an artist" if Vinnie called amongst other things. No one thinks it's weird he went from Gretsch, Remo and Hardware Company X to Ludwig Drums, Heads and Hardware? I may be wrong about heads as well, I thought he switched off Remo but the magazine shows otherwise.

Not trying to double down just to be argumentative here. That would have been nice to say instead of a blanket comment.

Vinnie comes out with a massive change in gear. Does a magazine cover that is legitimately one of the worst cover photos ever.
I don't know how anyone in marketing thought "Yeah that's the shot to choose for the front of a magazine".

Does the exact same "It's about sound" reasoning that every other endorser says to do the basic PR Claim. Most artists don't switch brands and say "Well it was convenient".

Using another example. D'addario artist who switches to Promark then just so happenstance switches endorsements to Evans shortly thereafter? They can make the claim they just happened to fall in love with Evans/Promark, but it's more likely then not a move for convenience.

Rumors are just that. If Dsop has all the answers he could have answered them. It is VERY strange to have someone switch big endorsements (not going from Soultone to Soulluck symbols from Dan the Drummer man who plays on buckets on Wednesdays at the pier or last named Appice) twice in that short span of time.
Matt Halpern is the only other one I can think of. Went from Mapex to Yamaha and then back to Mapex (until Joe Hibbs passed and then he switched to Pearl). Someone asked him about it at a clinic shortly after it happened and it was quickly shut down.

I know I'm going to regret jumping into the fray, but some of the information is inaccurate. After Vinnie left Zildjian in March 2012, and I left Zildjian at the end of 2012, we were back in regular contact in 2013, during his brief time with Ludwig. He had valid reasons for the decisions he made and that's all I'll say.

But I can confirm that when Vinnie left Zildjian in March 2012, I personally told him he could come back if he changed his mind. At the time, I didn't anticipate leaving Zildjian nine months later. But yes, I offered to waive what we called "Armand's Golden Rule." He's certainly worth it.

Always respect your input John.

well...I was told that Vinnie showed up to play the New Orleans Jazz Festival with Sting expecting drums to be there provided by Ludwig.
VC went to the gig site only to find NO DRUMS waiting for him. Why? I don't know...but it was a BIG SCREW UP on Ludwig's part.
Sooo...Vinnie ended up "renting" a kit in Kenner Louisiana that would meet his needs.HE paid for it.I guess the drums were picked up or returned afterward.
So VC called Ludwig and asked that they REPAY HIM the $ for the rental.Ludwig,in a word, refused.
END of relationship.

And that was the moment Vinnie re-re-discovered that great Gretsch sound and was baptized in silver sealer. He was home again and the drums weren't fighting him any longer....The End
