I’ve somehow gotten to the point where I own 13 snares. I have three that I think could work well for just about anything; a 60’s supra, a 70’s Slingerland sound king, and my #1 choice 60’s Rogers powertone.

It can do a fat low back beat, its super crisp and responsive at medium tension and it doesn’t have any issue cranked up into pop punk/reggae territory. Its very bright for a wood snare.

Its held up to 30 years of very regular gigging without a case before I got it without any damage other than the felt falling off the muffler. It sounds great, looks good, and it was my first snare so it has sentimental value

I have 10 snares, I like all of them for different reasons however the one that's getting the most playtime now is an old Dennis Chambers model from Pearl. My wife purchased it for me used. It has some significant fading/discoloration in the white paint almost a pinkish color depending on where you look. It must have sat in the sun for years. I don't usually tune high, but this drum seems to love it and due to a 4ply shell it has some body/warmth to it even at higher tunings. It really does sound like DC's drum. Great crosstick, sensitive, very adjustable throws, looks vintage-esq......

Black Magic Stainless Steel. Sounds incredible for all styles. Has been my main gigging snare 98% of the time since 2010. Has played Jazz to Country to Classic Rock to pit orchestra/plays to Polka to Klezmer to my little kiddie band.

I heard a rumor that a Supralite was giving it a run for its money…

It absolutely does give the Black Magic a run for its money. I own a 13” and 15” Supralite, and they can both live up to my Stainless Steel Black Magic. There is just something unique about this SS Black Magic that makes it unique sounding.

I have over 50 snares, and yet, Number One is the one in my avatar--an 8x14 Slingerland Magnum. It is LOUD and records like a dream, gets a fat power ballad sound in seconds. Sounds great tuned high as well. There's just something about these 5-ply shells. Last time I recorded with it, we used it flat through the board, no EQ, and I think it was mixed that way, too. Unbelievable sound, pretty maple finish. Kicking butt since 1985.

My favorite I own is a Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute in sea blue. I own 3 snares.

My favorite I get to play frequently is a Yamaha AHM autumn red. It has an amazing dynamic range and I can get sounds out of it that I haven’t gotten out of other snares.

6.5x14 Craviotto "Johnny C" model. This drum has sold me on solid shell snares. It does everything I want from a snare. It has a great tuning range, is extremely sensitive, and has a great cross stick sound. It can sound bright, but not harsh, and can sound fat with a bit of dampening.

mine is this ocheltree phantom steel drum. 5x14, carbon steel shell. very thick and heavy. It's like no other drum i've ever heard or played. it's loud, sensitive, cracks, is extremely responsive, has a huge tuning range. I like it cranked tight. Plus it looks cool with the tribal looking phantom badge.

And this one. It’s just so “right”. Can’t go wrong with it and a joy to play.

Like I said, it's the "next" one. Look what just showed up at my door this morning. Summit Black Cherry 6.5x14 solid. She's right at home and my new favorite snare. I quickly put it through a couple tunings at the risk of blowing out my post-op stitches, and it sounds beautiful! Can't wait to spend some more time with it.
