I found this black acrolite 6.5” I’m really loving. Looks amazing and sounds fat. I wonder why they don’t reintroduce the black version of these as new. Wasn’t easy to find.
Everyone wanted the Acro's like how they used to be, with the silver paint exterior and the P85 (although you can get one with any throw you prefer).
The shell of the Blacro's always seemed to ring out a little longer. Not sure if that was because of the finish or the shell material Ludwig was getting in those days, or what was goin' on, but I always noticed that about those drums.
Weird.

Nothing but great things to say about this drum. it's a killer. I can't wait to hear what you think after playing it!
Put it through the paces today a bit. I can echo what others have said about this drum -- it does its own thing, something that I haven't really seen other drums do.

The best comparison I can make for it -- it's like a wooden bell brass snare.

What I mean by that seemingly nonsensical description is:

When comparing a bell brass snare (by that, I mean a thick, 3mm+ cast brass snare) to a standard brass snare (i.e., a ~1mm flanged brass drum), the bell brass has a constant amount of body in the sound. You can crank the drum up, and it still has a low end "thump" that you feel in your chest and abdomen. It's visceral, and it goes to tape extremely well. It carries this thump while still getting the crack + ring of a standard brass drum. And it's why a bell brass really likes to be cranked up -- you get that high end ring + crack from the higher head tension, but the shell itself balances it out with tons of low-end -- it's like a pre-eq'ed / mic'ed drum, but 100% acoustic.

The VectorCast works that way, but the "baseline" in its case is a standard 5" deep maple snare. You don't get the ring of a metal drum -- it really does behave in the top 2/3 of its frequency range like a wood drum. But that visceral THUMP is there again. Again, it's like you've mic'ed and eq'ed this drum, but you're getting it in the room. And again, it really excels when cranked up -- you get the response and crispness of a cranked up wood drum, but that low-end body that moves your core.

Really enjoying this drum -- can't wait to take it out on a gig!

I used mine this weekend. Another thing that is great about it is it seems to just give back no matter how hard you hit it, similar also to a bell brass.

Haaa, right, I think Orriolo is doing a Ferromanganese as well and Dunnett, right? Is it a sound on its own or more like Steel? I will check it on youtube, thanks for posting, great one.

It's like steel, but a little more bite and more character. Listen to some old Sonor drums, you'll see.

I think you have seen Gary's Posey photos from Summit but not the photos in real at my place, last snare coming from him:
14X6.25" PURPLEHEART WITH BRASS HW AND 5 POSITION BUT+MAGNETIC DW THROW OFF (Great one by the way, super easy to go from a very sloppy tension to a tight one in 5 perfect incremental!)

Ok, INDé Bronze is the next one to come, maybe this friday or next Tuesday after the long weekend, the AVA Red Stain and a Cherry from Sonique, coming from Scooter 540 for both the INDé and the Sonique...Great, we have same tastes but not always same size so, when he made a little mistake with the shorter size, I'm lucky to get a discount on snares that are unreally new!!
