Ok I pretty much have my mind made up that I'm going to get a Ludwig Classic Maple 20/12/14 as my next kit. The question is, which color? I'm glad to see that model comes in so many shades, but I know it's going to be hard to settle on just 1 color.

First, let's get what I don't want out of the way. No black or red...way too boring and I hate red. Having said that, here's what I DO want. I'm looking for a classy, yet somewhat different color. I like the oyster shades, but black or blue oyster is out. And I'm not all that crazy about the natural colors either.

Here are the ones I'm particularly interested in:

Vintage White Marine:

Olive Oyster:

Vintage Bronze Mist:

Gold Sparkle:

I think I'd be happy with any of these colors. Which would you go with? Or do you have another suggestion?

Thanks!

Out of the colors you've chosen I picked gold sparkle. The bronze mist looks classy from up close, but colored stage lights will do very strange things to it.

IMHO the colors that do best under stage lighting are WMP (the vintage WMP looks dull) and silver sparkle, both of which are neutral and will take on the color of whatever lights are hitting it. Gold sparkle is so strong that it'll look good even through colored gels.

If the kit will be a studio queen I'd pick the bronze mist.

Plastic shrinks;
Plastic is temporary.
You when you pick natural woods and stain you have less choice so you're happier longer..
lol
If you pick red sparkle or pearl whatever, you have to like it year-round :: )
where with wood finish it just exists
like a tree.

My first Luddies were Gold Sparkle and I've never had anothter Ludwig kit since.
From your choices I think I'd go with the White Marine, for me it just screams Class

that dimebag, are what special effects and LED light shows are for ..; )
not all gigs are under lights these day; most some are out in the field "where the wheat is golden and the tulips are...tulip.."
or on a sidewalk 'where the buildings are grey.. the asphalt...
"zoom" stages don't count.
only in virtual reality.

Ah, Nubs, I was in your exact place a few years ago, with the same Downbeat in my sights.

I ended up getting Olive Pearl, which is aligned with your option of Olive Oyster. The Olive of any texture is unique and classy, looks good under various types of lighting. It’s a nod to vintage but wasn’t really a straight up offering from Ludwig of yesterday. My Olive Pearl references patina but is new and clean and yes, even fresh and minty. As in real mint. When I ordered mine, I could tell one of the dealer’s reps wasn’t crazy about it. Later I gathered that he played metal.

This brings about my next questions relating to your quest:

What sort of music do you play?

Do you rock and twirl sticks? Maybe gold.

Jazz of any persuasion? Maybe the Vintage WMP.
Studio? Indie? Singer Songwriter? Maybe the bronze.

Some, but not all of the above? Maybe the Olive Pearl.

I’m not one of those guys who swaps out kits every year. Choosing a finish is like choosing a tattoo. Take your time. Make sure you are sober. Don’t listen to too many of your bros. Maybe check with some of the women in your life first. But know that there will be days you love it and an equal number of days you tell yourself, maybe I should have gotten the _____....

I think the question has to be asked - what would that mediocre half ass non musical gymnastic chop freak no swing not a jazz drummer named Buddy Rich choose? Or maybe I should ask, what would the 80/20 hipster jazz master Nate Smith choose?

Hey, just keeping with the Buddy Rich theme lately!
