Saw him playing that kit with Captain Beefheart on a live in-the-studio performance on a local tv station around 70-71 (Decals-era). Fit in perfectly with Beefheart's unorthodox material.
You were there? Wow! I believe I have that show on VHS. Can't seem to find it on the internet.

No, I saw Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band perform live on a local Washington, D.C. rock show. They were in town for a performance that evening, and they were on the local show in the afternoon and played a few numbers. I tried to get to the show that night, but I got lost trying to find the venue, so I only got to see them on tv. I remember that French was wearing girl-watcher sunglasses and that all the toms on his kit were congas (they shot him from mid-chest up, so all I could see were three conga drums in front of him in lieu of conventional toms.
